I was just watching Great American Bash 1989, and in the main event Ric Flair keeps back body dropping Terry Funk when he tries to piledrive him, and then Flair does a couple of ugly piledrivers of his own. Seeing something like six piledrivers in a row got me thinking about just how unrealistic looking the standard piledriver is in terms of setup. You put the guys head between your legs, and he automatically grabs you around the ankles, then you pull on his mid-section and that makes him lift his legs straight in the air. It doesn't matter much these days, since the WWE basically bans the move outright and Kayfabe is not what it used to be, but how did we see that move as kids and believe wrestling was all real?
I know there are lots of unrealistic moves, heck just bouncing off the ropes is suspiciously unnatural, but the piledriver was a common move, a finisher for a lot of guys, and considered a serious enough move to be banned in a lot of states and territories. Yet, it's hard to look at it done and not wonder why the guy taking it wouldn't just collapse to the ground and avoid it, do a backdrop like Flair did, or fight it tooth and nail all the way, instead of grabbing the guys ankles and flipping his legs up.

All I do is say, "Hm... without these unrealistic moves... wrestling would be hella boring."
There. Belief further suspended--problem solved.

Vader's powerbomb works okay (opponent's body lifted to one shoulder with entire body to one side of the head), but any of those that involve lifting the guy so that he is sitting on both of your shoulders facing you does strain credibility. The only one of those that worked was Nash's because he did not bother bringing the guy all the way up. The way Nash did it, a really strong guy could actually do it without much cooperation from the opponent.

It's bugging me who are the guys in OMGtheykilledkenny's avatar? The Briscos (Mark & Jay) and are pretty much one of if not the best tag teams right now. And i think it works. Remember, the guy should be sqeezing your head in his thighs. That's not so easy to get out of. But it is better to not think of such things with wrestling.

When I was a mark, I believed that wrapping your arms around the other guy's thighs and lifting your legs straight up were defensive moves. If you didn't do those, you would take more damage and possibly be injured. If you did do those, you would just be knocked out at the worst. In reality, it is kind of like that. Those are done to prevent injury. It's just that the piledriver isn't actually being done as an attack.

I've been knocked out by peoples elbows countless times.. so stop it People's Elbows? Why didn't you just get up and run away as The Rock ran across the ring 2091780924 times?

The way announcers built up how destructive the move was made me overlook the mechanics of it. Especially the one where the Horsemen did it on Paul Orndorff.

aside from a backbody drop, whats the only reversal to a piledriver? a double leg sweep. Hence grabbing the ankles. And why hold on all the way down to the mat? to attempt to push yourself off the guy before you head crunches the mat.
and if youve ever hit some tight ring ropes, you can help but keep going. Maybe not across the whole ring, but it keeps you moving without a doubt.
i kno its a little lame, but most of this stuff can be explained.

Didn't Mick Foley's piledriver at least make sense, though? It was the same setup, but he just falls back before you'd get a chance to get your legs up or anything.

His Pulling Piledriver. Ironically, it's much safer than a regular piledriver.

Yeah so's the tombstone. But the Tombstone looks WAAAY cooler then the regular Piledriver, and you dont gotta roll the person off you when you hit the ground...
