I thought if a wrestler created his own gimmick /character that he owned the rights to it. Now by all the reports I have ever read, all have said that Austin's ex-wife had come up with the name at breakfast. Doesn't that mean that she or Austin would own the rights or did WWE screw him outta the rights in a contract or something? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Cold_Steve_Austin

I don't know about the "Stone Cold" part, but Steve Williams legally changed his name to Steve Austin, so he retains all rights to the name and likely character.

But what about the Six Million Dollar Man? Wouldn't the guy who created that name have the rights to it?

well I think WWe copyrighted it before Steve Austin did.
I think the rule of thumb is that you have to create it before you're under contract with WWe.

Yeah, its the intellectual property clause. Whatever you create while you are employed is the sole property of your employer.

Unless your last name is Dudley That was their fault for not paying attention. Yeah, they have no one to blame but themselves. I doubt Austin would go anywhere else anyway cause he's basically done with an in ring career and his movie flopped (I liked it personally) so the "stone cold" part doesn't really matter.

Sting the wrestler, not Sting the singer owns the copyright to the name Sting. Which is a shame because I would have marked hard for a scorpion deathlock at the Police reunion concerts. Or something.

The issue is trademark, not copyright.
And I'm sure every WWE talent contract contains a provision that the WWE owns the trademark to any name or nickname utilized by a wrestler.
Someone has a right to use his own name for any purpose, of course, which is why we see DH Smith, Marcus Cor Von, etc.
