Can somebody please explain this to me? Why's it so funny? I know it sounds pretty stupid but is there any more subtle humor to it?

It's more of an inside joke.
He didn't want to do the job so made some lame speech to announce he was forefitting and during the speech he said he had lost his smile and could not wrestle. While 12 year old girls weeped.
And this is from a guy who's favourite wrestler is HBK.

Shawn's way of saying that he couldn't be bothered to come to work that month.

Hey, I don't care, at least it gave us Austin vs. Bret at WM 13, which was better than any match ever in America.

Shawn was burnt out over being champ for the last year and wasn't happy anymore is what happened on TV. Off TV, rumors were that he just didn't want to job to Hart at WrestleMania 13.
I say, who cares at this point. If Austin didn't face Hart at WM13, who knows where we would have been at today.

I guess I should've said "In My Opinion..."

I guess I should've said "In My Opinion..." Just messing around. Anyway, HBK losing his smile and vacating the title was one of those dumb luck things that just happened to work out really well for the WWF at the time. A guy vacating the title because he didn't want to work should be poison for a company, but it led to one of the best matches in WWF history and was one of the events that ultimately would lead us to the Attitude Era. Another example, by the way, was the Montreal Screwjob, which had it not been for the Mr. McMahon heel turn, could have seriously wounded WWF.

He tweaked his knee at a house show title match (with Sid and Bret Hart), went to the doctor, and after the doc realizes Shawn was wrestling without an ACL for the last 10 years, told him HBK's career is over. That's how the first story started it seemed. Of course Bret IMO would make up things on the dirt sheet to make Shawn look bad for the umpteenth time, but at the same time, it seems like Shawn only "Tweaked" the knee and came back three months later.

If it wasn't for Shawn losing his smile, we wouldn't have been witness to the greatest song of all time. "Tell me a lie!"

Pure genius!
The "I lost my smile" speech is probably one of the most corny and cheesy and cheap pieces of acting in WWF/E history (probably on par with Hogan weeping at Liz's bedside and Macho+Liz reunion).
According to backstage rumours, Shawn wasn't all too excited about returning the favour to Bret after WMXII, and used his legit knee injury to take some time off in a very crucial and suspicious moment. To make things worse, he came back waaaay earlier than he was supposed to, according to his horrible injury.
That being said, I still love the whole promo (see my sig) because Shawn was an hell of an actor for not cracking up while he was BS'ing [kinda...] the crowd, the locker room and the office.

He's only getting equal treatment. That's all he and his buddies have ever wanted. Every wrestler gets to do that when they're burnt out and sad.
Don't they?

according to Shawn's book, Dr. Andrews told him his career was over because there was no way he'd be able to wrestle without an ACL (he'd been doing it for 10 years, but I guess it started to act up again). This is one of the things I find fishy in Shawn's book. Dr. Andrews, probably the most respected doctor among north american athletes (just look at how many athletes go down to Alabama to see him if they need surgery) says Shawn can never wrestle again, but then a couple months later says Shawn should be fine as long as he wears a brace. I mean, Shawn couldn't mess up his knee any worst than it already was, but no doctor would allow Shawn to go back to the WWF if his knee was in such bad shape; especially Dr. Andrews.

Someday I hope they do a segment from within the WWE Vault and someone MTFO on finding Shawn's smile in a clear plastic box.
"Now we can give it back to him! He was so upset that he'd lost it!"
