I was just thinking today about how good we had it during the Attitude and just pre-Attitude years. WWE did a few character development interviews in that time--the first two that come to mind are Stone Cold following Owen breaking his neck (This gave Stone Cold a side to sympathize with, while still retaining his badass persona) and Mankind when he revealed "Dude Love" and started to become a lot more sympathetic. I'm sure I am forgetting a couple. Anyway, I really miss that style.
Coincidentally (Perhaps not), JR was involved in both of them, and he was a great catalyst for good lines. I would kill to see him doing something similar again, because he seems like the best conversationalist (not commentator in this context) that the WWE currently has on broadcasting staff.
What character could they use to have a similar discussion with today, and really build someone with?
Even though CM Punk is already getting his push, I imagine if they still discussed his history and motivations for becoming straight-edge, it would add a lot to his character and give him additional lasting value.

I agree, character development is definately something WWE need to work on a lot.
Punk is such a great talker, but never gets the chance to shine with the mic. I'd love to see more interveiws with him.

I think they should bring back character development period. They still have wrestlers walking around with no character. What is John Cena? He's not a rapper anymore. Is he a marine? What is he? A cheap Hogan knockoff?
And how come HHH is bouncing between two gimmicks?
The last character to DEVELOP instead of getting an all out random change would probably be... Santino? Orton? And they're the better for it.
HBK is well developed. Compare the personality he left with and came back with, and notice how you could expect that character to act like that in those situations. Vince has an abnormally well developed and constantly changing character. But then there's Umaga... Kinda impossible to develop that character. Unless you want to take him bowling or something.

I agree that interviews need to come back, but I also think that managers need to be brought back for those that can't talk. A good mouthpiece could probably benefit a whole slew of guys who have no chance of getting over on their own, especially with a microphone in their face.

Oddly enough I thought they did this well with the Glamazon last night. Having her revel in Candace's real injury really gave her heat. It was the first time I felt any particular way about a female wrestler since the Dudley's first put Mullah & Mae Young through a table.

It's a valid point. Everyone always complains about "too much backstage" when they try to get some character development going. The "interview" segments would take care of some of that handily.
