Sunny and Sable, the forerunners of the Divas, were quite popular in their day. Trying to recreate that sucess is not a horrible idea.

other than Beth Phoenix I dont really see any other wrestling talent out there. Uhh...have you never heard of Mickie James, Melina, Victoria, or Jillian? All of those women I just mentioned along with the aforementioned Beth Phoenix have great talent, but aren't allowed to show it because they're given five minutes to work with (that's if they're lucky) AND they have to carry the ones who don't have enough talent yet.

I think women are in wrestling just so wrestling isn't TOO homoerotic.

I don't think that Vince is hiring them as sex-slaves, to be honest. There's a long tradition of hot women in skimpy outfits in sports. Think cheerleaders, ring girls, etc. etc. Many of the divas are in the company to appeal to the viewers. A number of the divas do have an indy background, though. Beth, Mickie, Jillian and Katie Lea (who I think has just been called up) have all wrestled in the indies before coming to the WWE. Similarly, Victoria and Melina are talented wrestlers, although they don't really have the same background and training. Wasn't Victoria an Indy worker before she joined the 'E? She was powerbombed through a table by "The Goodfather" long before the Victoria character was devised...

I believe she was simply in developmental at the time, but I could very well be wrong.

victoria always can have one of the funniest stories about how she made her character debut..she turned from a ho who got powerbombed through a table into an almost always important prominent character in the women's division

See this is the thing, because I remember back in 1999 WOW magazine voted her "hottest woman in wrestling" or something like that. Although my memory is hazy (this was 1999 after all) I'm pretty sure they featured her before her WWF debut (the aforementioned powerbomb through the table)
