Wrestling can be strange sometimes, especially how Vince MacMahon and those who come from his way of thinking see it. In other forms of entertainment and sports, fans talking about what you are doing on the interet is welcome and is taken as a sign that people are excited about what you are doing and this is very welcomed by leagues (like the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and Nascar) and the studios behind TV shows and films.
However, in wrestling (WWE in particular), fans talking about the shows online and us figuring out what they may be doing is seen as a disaster and is something to be railed against. Vince would rather control all aspects of WWE and us (the fans) than have us care about his company and be excited by his product.
The other way that this happens is when Vince or any of his proteges go out of their way to attack the fans or punish us when we don't like their product. In other forms of entertainment, the artists, writers, producers, directors, and studioes want us to like their product and want us to come and support them in greater numbers with each release or episode. TV shows and film series want to add new fans with each release and musicians hope that more people buy their next album than their last release. They don't do things to intentionally punish fans and drive them away. And sports leagues want to always increase their fan base.
However, in Wrestling, the promoter may get angry with fans and want to get them for knowing too much or not liking their ideas as much as they do. Vince and Steph do this sometimes with their putting Vince on TV far too often and all of the teasing that never goes anywhere. And now they are doing it with the Jericho return because we figured it out, so, now they want to get back at us for being too smart. And it isn't just WWE that does this. When Russo ran WCW, he tried his best to drive the fans away on purpose. He hated the WCW fans because they didn't like his "brilliant ideas" and we grew to hate him as well. The screwy way that he booked shows to punish performers who were over with fans but hated by Russo (Goldberg in particular) was done with the purpose of driving fans away from the product so to control the fan base. He went so far as to say that he hated us on camera (and I don't believe that it was a work) and he wouldn't give us what we want out of spite. And he learned this from the MacMahons and how they do business.
This may come across as a long rant but I have always wondered about this idea and I wonder what other fans think about it.
