This was the first show to happen after I became a wrestling fan, so it has a fond place in my heart. With this PPV coming, I decided to rewatch it and I had some lingering thoughts/questions?
Was Macho Man hurt for the majority of 1990? At Summerslam, he barely had a match with Dusty. On this show he just did an interview. Then at the Rumble, he was only involved with extracurricular activities with the Warrior match. It seems odd that his involvement on the major PPVs would be so low, but I never recall hearing about him being injured.
I think they really dropped the ball by not having Slaughter's aisle promo not be heard by the live crowd. Not that they needed to hear what he was saying, but because they had to endure listening to that drumroll. That is some awful theme music and for the fans to have to keep listening to that while Slaughter cut a rather lengthy promo must have been painful.
Speaking of Slaughter...do you think given that he was getting the title shot at the Rumble that they should have had make it to the grand finale match of Survival? Going into that Rumble match he seemed like such a weak #1 contender. Having him look a bit stronger on this show may have helped.
Still on that Alliance/Mercenaries match...how bizarre is it to have a Russian, a Mexican and two guys from New Zealand coming out to Stars and Stripes Forever?
It may have been for one night only, but Tito's flying forearm was made to look like the Pedigree on this show; he took out three guys with that move. Granted, it was Boris Zukoff, Tanaka, and the Warlord, but still.
Then again, most finishers during that time were made to look pretty devastating. When Jake hit the Warlord with the DDT, you would have thought he shot him.
Finishers also seem more impressive when they're properly sold by the announcers. I don't think the team of Gorilla and Piper get enough credit. Sure Gorilla was a natural paired with guys like Jesse and the Brain, but I thought Piper played off of him well too. Piper got so damn excited about everything and made you like the faces more because he rooted for them so hard. But he was great in that he would also call out faces when they did something dumb (i.e. Hulk trying to slam Quake early in the match).
One final thought...I hated the inconsistency in the rules on this show. Taker gets counted out for beating up Dusty in the aisle, but Martel doesn't get counted out when Jake chases him out of the ring with Damian, even though neither Taker nor Martel were the legal man at the time. I realize why it happened that way, but as a kid who was a big mark for Jake, I hated how it went down. I figure that Taker was actually supposed to be the legal man when he attacked Dusty and he just goofed.
