Both in their primes, what would this bad boy look like...

Well ... it really depends on the booking, I suppose.
Who would be the top guy in this situation?

Well ... it really depends on the booking, I suppose. Who would be the top guy in this situation? It's completely up to you or whoever wants to book it. Just looking at different hypothetical scenarios. But I guess for the most part I'd go with Bret as the top guy just because he came first. Also if anyone really wants it can be more realistic and not have both guys in their prime, but really who wants to think about a 2007 body-ravaged Bret taking on Cena, or a teenage Cena going up against the Hitman?

Well, I'll look at it from both angles, but with both guys in their physical primes. If we're booking this match, we might as well have a time machine, so we can do such a thing.
Bret vs. Cena, with Cena as the top dog would go something like ... Bret working over Cena for the majority of the match, followed by the comeback, FU, Cena wins. Or makes him submit. Because that's how 99% of all Cena matches are booked - he sells for nine and a half minutes, and wins before the match reaches it's tenth minute (with variations in time, depending on how long he poses for the Five Knuckle Shuffle, of course).
Now, with the situations reversed, it would be Cena controlling the match with Bret having to make the comeback. Which means that Cena would have to, well ... wrestle. And since he only knows five moves, and they're all lousy, the match would stink.
Yeah, Cena can perform more than five moves, if he's told to, but not very well. He can't even do his mainstays right. They look different every match, oh wait, they're MODIFIED, sorry.
Honestly, I'm not even a fan of Bret Hart, but from what I've read and watched, he could have a decent match with a lot of guys, and when paired with the right opponent that complimented his style, he could have a GREAT match. And since Cena is mobile and not a stiff like, say, the Barbarian or Sid Justice, I think this match would be the former - decent, for a given amount of decent.
I'm terribly biased, since I really dislike Cena in pretty much every regard aside from his excellent attitude and work ethic, but there you have it.

Bret Hart wins when John Cena passes out from the Sharpshooter, ala Austin at Wrestlemania 13.

I'd love this match. Two set series, Hart winning once, then Cena winning it on WM as Bret retires for good. Handshake and hug with Bret handing over the world title.
In a world where all would be right, and all.

I'd say it'd be a great match as both guys would work around their 5 big moves. Since both only have 5 big moves.
Cena's booking in matches was a lot like Bret, where Bret would get dominated most of the match, make the comeback and make them submit to a sharpshooter, or scoring the win off a roll up.
It really depends on if they would have chemistry with each other though.
Cena could win with the FU, but besides his fued with Shamrock I've never seen Bret tap out. I think Cena would power out of the Sharpshooter, but would lose to a crucifix or some different type of pin combination while escaping the FU.

Is this question meant to be the IWC's favarate idealogically accepted philosophical state of a wrestler vs The antagonistically reguarded formumatically percieved state of subconcious entertainment?
Is this what Bret Hart stands for vs what John Cena stands for?
Or is this really just Bret Hart vs John Cena?
If It's Bret Hart vs John Cena, I see it like this.
Someone else said that one scenerio would be Bret working on Cena, and Cena making a comeback. What this really means, is that Bret would "put the heat on". When a wrestler does that, it means that he is working as a heel, and the wrestler making the comeback is working as the face. What many fans have found so far, is that "Cena would win with 5 moves, because that's all he knows". The truth is this: In pro wrestling, you have to know how to do the moves that you will be placed in. You learn how to be put into a move before you actually learn how apply it yourself.
Another scenerio would be Cena dominating him, and Bret making the comeback for the win. Same things apply here.
The real truth is, is that neither one of these things would happen, atleast not in the ways described. See, many of us are used to main eventer's facing midcarders, because that's what happens most of the time.
you have to work around with status, that's how the match is structered out:
A babyface jobber facing a midcard heel, the face would make a short comeback, and the heel would win with one move afterward. There will be no home stretch before the finish. If the face jobber were to win (upset), the heel would cut him off after his comeback, and the face would win with a very lucky move, mabe some cheating. The face would NEVER win decisevley, unless the midcard heel were to be demoted into jobberhood, or the jobber face just wrestled his last match as a jobber.
If a jobber heel faces a midcard face, the heel would put the heat on for a VERY short amount of time, and the face will make his comeback, and then use his special move immediately afterward for the win. If the jobber heel were to win, it would be because of cheating and luck, and would happen right after the comeback. Again, with no home stretch. The face would be getting demoted if this were to happen, or theyd be pushing the jobber into the midcard.
If a midcard face were to face a midcard heel, there would be a long "heat", and then the face would make his comeback, and then the heel would cut him off. The finish would take place after this, most of the time without a home stretch, either man could win.
If a heel main eventer is facing a midcard face, it's the same as a midcard heel facing a jobber face. If a main event face is facing a midcard heel, it's the same thing as a midcard face going against a jobber heel.
A main event face vs a main event heel, there is a long set of "heat", then there is a "hope spot" and then there's a comback by the face. The heel ends the comeback by cutting him off, and now we are in the home stretch. This is not the finish, and is usually the part of the match that alot of people ignore, even if it's 10 minutes long. Everything you do in this part of the match is either trying to finish off you're opponent, or stop you're opponent from finishing off you. You cand do false finishes, ref bumps, all kinds of things. The finish is at the end of the home stretch.
There's one more level higher up than main eventer. It's the flagship of the company, the one guy that's out drawing everyone else, or the company feels is the right guy that can out draw everyone else. If you can't really out draw everyone else, you will not be a flagship for more than a year. Hogan, Yokozuna, Bret Hart, Diesel, Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold, The Rock, HHH, and John Cena have been the flagships of WWF/E.
If a flagship guy faces a main eventer, it's like a main eventer facing a midcarder. A flagship face vs a main event heel would work like a main event face vs a midcerd heel. The "heat" would be longer, the face would make his comeback (it would be his set comeback, because the heel isn't good enough to avoid it) and the heel would cut him off, followed by a very short home stretch, and then the finish. If the heel wins, it has to be tainted, because he's not on the flagship's level. A flagship heel vs a main event face, same thing.
Now, you're probably wondering, hey, we've seen main eventers vs main eventers, but what happens when to main eventers of the same allignment face each other, like face vs face and heel vs heel?
Well, for example, a main event face vs a midcard face would be just like hell face, but with one of them playing heel. The one that plays the role of Babyface, is winning. That's why they make the other one heel. If a main event face is fighting a midcard face, the midcard face will wrestle the match as a heel.
For heel vs heel, the one playing the heel will win, and the one playing the face will loose.
Very rarely, very very rarely, you will have two flagships facing each other, or one flagship and another guy destined to be a flagship. These matches very rarely happen, but it's what everyone is building for, the reason why there even are statuses. Hogan'Andre, Hogan/Warrior, Hogan/Sting, Austin/Rock are these types of matches. Austin/Goldberg would have been one.
Bret Hart vs John Cena would be one of these types of matches.
Having a flagship vs flagship type of match with both of them being a babyface is even more rare. In a babyface vs babyface flagship match, both men will portray both face and heel. One guy will be face, and the other one will put the heat on, and the face will make a comeback, Then the heel will cut him off. then, the face will gain advantage and turn heel, and will but the "heat" on the guy who has now just turned face. Then, the face will make a comeback, and the heel will cut him off, and now they are both back to being babyface, and will have a long home stretch before the finish. Sometimes, you can have the home stretch before the second comeback, like they did in the Hogan/Warrior match at Wrestlemania 6, so the finish would be right after the second comeback.
Yes, a Bret Hart vs John Cena match would be a very great match, especially with both of them in their primes.

Not good.
Much like with Angle...Bret Hart would just expose John Cena for the garbage he is. Putting him up against guys who are way better than him is the reason people started turning on Cena in the first place.
It would be a total bomb. I'd love to hear the crowd rip into Cena though ;D
