Not that terrible on babyface color commentary. A little bland, but could be worse. (e.g. Mongo) Considering the guy was the on-air kayfabe "GM," he probably couldn't go back to being a ref if/when he comes back. Thoughts on him getting behind the table instead?

I wish Teddy Long was still GM of Smackdown I thought he was doing an outstanding job and I don't understand why the WWE had to remove him from that position.
But to answer question I wouldn't mind him on commentary he's no worse than Michael Cole or Todd Grisham.

I found Teddy to be entertaining as a commentator back when he was the heel backer of D-Lo Brown/Rodney Mac.

I'd prefer to see Teddy Long become the heel announcer beside Michael Cole and have JBL as the heel SmackDown GM.

I'd prefer to see Teddy Long become the heel announcer beside Michael Cole and have JBL as the heel SmackDown GM. I think it's been established that JBL has other time commitments with respect to his finance career, so being an on-air persona who has to come to rehearsals and memorize lines might not be possible for him. However, if and when either King or JR retires, I think worse things could happen than having Teddy team up with Maggle, and move JBL to the red show on commentary. Preferably color.
