Does he mean his body would have broken down years ago if he didn't take steroids? I'm not entirely sure on the context of Hart's comments.

I personally was prescribed a topical steroid for a rash that I had on my hands.
Who knows, maybe it shaved a few years off my life.
But it sure beats walking around the rest of my life with an itchy, scabby, red hand.
It's pretty well documented that half the MLB players in the 80s and 90s were on steroids. You don't see them dropping like flies like in the WWE.
Any wrestlers that's died recently has never been JUST because of steroids. There's always a combination of recreational drugs, prescription drugs and general unhealthy lifestyle.

Yeah, I think it's best that we don't comment on this, given that we have zero context behind what Bret is saying here.
Did he receive steroids after a potentially career threatening injury? After multiple career threatening injuries? Did he just take them casually/cycled through them? What was the nature of his use?
I wouldn't want to pass any judgment unless I knew the context here.

My friend who had a spinal cord injury from work had steroids injections in his lower back which helped strengthen his back. I think in total, there were six injections he received, all done by a doctor. He is now back to playing active physical sports after months of therapy and I think the steroids did have a hand in helping his rehabilitation.
That may be the one true benefit that Bret may be referring to. It helps athletes recover from injuries. I don't believe Bret was advocating recreational use for steroids.

Bret was never the biggest guy around. Maybe he was pressured to get bigger and steroids helped?

Steriods = death; either slow or fast. Same can be said about smoking, and like someone said about sumo, being obese. It's entirely possible Hart meant in the context of healing from an injury.

I think Bret meant that he needed steroids to get big enough to make it in the 80s WWF. He could have easily been forgotten like 6 of his 7 brothers that didnt make it.

Bret FTW on that quote right there. I may not side with him on Montreal, but when it comes to admitting about steroid use, he needs to be applauded.

I was on steroids for a while when I was ill.
I threw a puppy off a bridge.

"i'm sure i wouldn't be here if i hadn't taken those shots"
and chances are, because you took those shots, you WON'T be here in a few decades. but hey, if he feels it's okay to take years off his life just for his little wrestling career (and bear in mind that guys like piper never took steroids, but still made it to the top, so roids are hardly a necccesity), then that's fine by me, but i've got a feeling his children won't accept that as a reason for growing up without a dad.
but can we get some context on what he said there? he might have been personally justified, but at the moment he seems selfish and just generally stupid.

I don't think many professional wrestlers like Hart would consider it their "little wrestling career". And if he's not here in a few decades, that's pretty good going at his age.

Haha what the f***? Do you even know that steroids have a legitimate use for things other than bulking up? That they're not poison? That your liver doesn't just TURN TO STONE OMG when you do a few cycles? That even though Nancy Grace says that 1500 wrestlers die a year from injecting the Devil Juice into their ass it's not true? I guess you'll probably flame me for pointing out that you know nothing but do whatever makes you feel better, sweetie. I know I can't force you to look up any actual studies beyond what cnn.com provides in their completely unbiased noneditorial stories. "i'm sure i wouldn't be here if i hadn't taken those shots" and chances are, because you took those shots, you WON'T be here in a few decades. but hey, if he feels it's okay to take years off his life just for his little wrestling career (and bear in mind that guys like piper never took steroids, but still made it to the top, so roids are hardly a necccesity), then that's fine by me, but i've got a feeling his children won't accept that as a reason for growing up without a dad. but can we get some context on what he said there? he might have been personally justified, but at the moment he seems selfish and just generally stupid.

The fact is that the way a LOT of wrestlers use steroids (and other drugs) is incredibly dangerous and reckless.
However, tons of people all over the world use them responsibly as a way to heal up after surgeries and other medical issues.
Again, we need to know the context first.

I really want to here people defend Bret Hart smoking pot part of his story. If Batista or Ultimate Warrior were to said steroids helped their careers, then people will not question them and they would be all condemning.
