Damn, did people get bent out of shape when he debuted. And to think Dustin wanted to take the character further, but Vince was afraid of the backlash. So he neutered it.

The first thing that popped in my head when I read the title was the Pillman/Austin gun incident. I dont think there was anything that over the top before then. kinda set the tone for the Attitude Era

I believe there were protests against the gimmick?
Well if they protested that they might as well have protested the makeup caked Adrian Adonis years before that. Why didnt they protest Billy and Chuck years later?
They chose to pick on one gimmick and yet it didn't do anything to ever stop such a gimmick from coming around again. A lost pursuit that should have never been started.
What did WCW have to do but take them off TV or something for six months?
Big deal there.
