Jerry Lawler stands up for his buddy J.R. and is involved AGAIN in a minifeud where he's the babyface.
JBL is trying to channel a bit of Jesse Ventura, but he gives credit to the faces, and ends up putting them over anyway.
Is the art of heel announcers totally dead and buried?
I don't see a good reason for that: a competent (and possibly funny) heel colour commentator adds a lot to a match and to a feud, basically bringing the audience to despise the "bad guy" even more, while cheering for the face.
But WWE don't want to risk having a heel more popular than the bland babyface. While I understand that for "not so popular" Superstars, I think we'd need some old fashioned back-and-forth at the commentary box, at least for main events.
Are the times of Monsoon-Ventura and McMahon-Heenan (or any combination with Jesse and Bobby actually) part of the past for good or is there hope?

I think JBL isn't too bad at it.. who was that one guy they had for like one night on ECW? nobody liked him but I thought he was going to be great and he could of replaced tazz. He was calling people idiots and stuff.

Ventura was a good heel announcer.
Even made of fun face names and seemed to try to justify even the worst antics of the heels.

I think there always needs to be a fully heel announcer. Always.
When it's like J.R. and King in 2007, it's boring. Same with Tazz/Styles and Tenay/West in TNA. Face-face just doesn't work.
The only good announcer right now is JBL. He prefers to talk about the wrestlers in the ring rather than anything else, which is something that we never see. Usually, they talk about the main event or something instead. And, even though he uses the same catchphrases every week, he always tries to put over the talent. He's only been commentating for about a year and a half or so, but he's already the best commentator in years.
It's definitely something that should be brought back.

JBL is on the fastrack to being one of the best announcers period. He is the perfect combination of heel, smark and smartass.

So JBL is a bad heel announcer because he doesn't just directly contradict sense and actually puts everyone over instead of just heels? Er...

JBL is excellent right now he's awesome, not just because every other damn announcer on TV sucks, but because he's excellent.

I don't think JBL is a horrible heel announcer, more like a heel commentator that believes in making sense. Note how he always insists that MVP is the one carrying the Hardy/MVP team- he doesn't really have to write off Matt as worthless.
Keep in mind that even WWF Bobby Heenan was willing to admit that a face had talent without making it seem as if he liked them.

But if we get this wish, everyone will complain that the heel commentator represents the office's wishes of burying talent on-air.
Coach was okay with Lawler (who hasn't been entertaining since Puppies) & JR. But I do agree that we need someone to act like a heel on commentary, since all heels make the commentary more interesting, even if it is just for one match. My picks:
RAW: Coach Smackdown : JBL is already there ECW: Striker. TNA: Scott D'Amore. Seriously, he was great that one time he muscled his big load into the commentary table.

I did like heel Lawler's grasps at knocking faces that often ventured into the ridiculous. JR: "Shamrock made Bret Hart tap out two weeks ago, and HBK tap out last week." King: "Yeah, but tapouts won't get you any wins in wrestling." JR: "THE HELL THEY WON'T!"

I wouldn't mind Coach with JR. It'd be better than his current role- he can only get abused by Regal for so long.

JBL is a GREAT color man.
Presumably, the office doesn't let him bury babyfaces on TV anymore. He used to. It was hilarious.
He would be a fantastic full-on heel commentator if he were allowed to be.
He's still the best thing going, anyway.

Well, how can a heel announcer do his job these days if nothing heels do these days make any sense? ><
I mean, it's the same reason we shit on Michael Cole for blindly defending the faces.

I think you need to have some intelligence to be a heel announcer. Ventura had it and Heenan certainly had it. Heenan was a wise-ass too but he has something upstairs.
For me JBL, Heyman and Cornette are just guys who shout the most obviously obnoxious and objectionable thing that they can think of and for me it's off putting. Just because you're saying something louder than the other guy it doesn't mean that I want to listen.

Heenan could justify a heel doing just about anything. For example, for Snitsky punted that fake baby on RAW a couple of years back.
JR: "I can't believe that damn Snitsky"
Heenan: "What are you talkin' about JR? All that baby does is cry and needs its diaper changed. Snitsky did the right thing."
