I thought that the match itself wasn't as bad as the fans at MSG made it out to be. First, the buildup to the match was stupid since Goldberg was already leaving when the match was made and WWE put the focus on Lesnar vs. Austin who couldn't wrestle anymore and was treated by Brock and every wrestler on Smackdown as if he was Superman (invincible and untouchable) I hated how Austin was booked after he retired from active wrestling because he was super invincible and no one could get over when they dealt with him. Second, once the fans found out that Brock was leaving, the MSG fans did what they always do when a wrestler leaves WWE, they boo him and act as if he betrayed them personally by leaving (thus the "you sold out" chants). I always thought that MSG fans were too hardcore for the WWE and had no respect for any other company and any other venture except for being a WWE superstar. I mean seriously, leaving a huge guarenteed contract to go try out for an NFL team who won't promise a position to him and getting a tenth of what he would get by staying in WWE isn't selling out. People leave their jobs all of the time to try something else and by the way the NFL is a billion times larger and more successful than WWE or any other wrestling company will ever be so we have to remember that being a wrestler or even a WWE superstar is seen as a step down from being in the NFL to many people out there. I don't like that at all but that is the reality.

I remember watching it and laughing all the way through. As a context psychologically it made sense. To big power wrestlers size each other up, go straight for the big moves to see whos stronger, one guy outpowers him and wins. Doesn't make for a particuarily interesting match if played through at this pace but, the psychologhy was there.
But the crowd was amazing that night. After all the build up behind the scenes of Lesnar apparently threatening any wrestler found talking to the internet with having to answer to him then whining like a child about all the stress of travelling after all that was handed to him. And Goldberg's mostly disappointing run didn't help matters. The fans were angry at both, knew they were going and gave them an appropriate send off. It was superb.

What would have made the match at bit more interesting is if Lesnar had gotten straight up after the 3 count and walked out.

Most half-assed performance in wrestling history.

In my opinion the WWE audience never got behind Goldberg. Even when they were pushing him hard, fans still cheered heels like the Rock and Chris Jericho over him, and even during his fued with uber-heel Triple H, he was still getting booed. From a wrestling stand point this match was really disappointing, of course I was in the minority who didn't think these two could have a good match even if they tried. What I did like about this match was the crowd's participation and Steve Austin being included in the mix.

...A crapper got a bigger reaction than both of them put together... they shoud NEVER wrestle again.
Infact that should be a wrestling law "A Crapper out pop you you retire"

Actually, I think it's a culmination of alot of psychological aspects as to why most people think the match was really bad.
It was actually a good match. Not great, but good. The fan reaction is what made the match boring, and unappealing. When you have so many aspects that are happening that are associated with a bad match, you will rarely allow yourself to see anything in the match in a positive light.
The aspects that I'm talking about that are associated with a bad match aren't the moves, It's the crowd psychology. I'm not talking about RING psychology, which is different than crowd psychology. If the crowd isn't there, then forget about it, you have nothing to work with.
See, so many fans think that when they watch a match, that they're on the "outside looking in", but this isn't the case, most fans have no clue whatsoever just how important they are to a match.
When you have a wrestling match, if you cant find a reason to project emotion, then it's going to look like you're just going through the motions. You can't project emotion just whenever you want, because then the fans are going to get lost, and then it's still going to look like you're just going through the motions anyway.
That's what happenned with Goldberg/Lesnar. I'm sure that everyone will agree that If Lesnar did the shooting star press at the end, or if Goldberg did a few back body drops in the beginning, that it would have been a better match. That is the very point that I'm making, the very fact that Lesnar would have had to resort to using a SSP to make the fans believe that the match was good, it shows what was missing, and no, it wasn't the moves. I'm sure that no matter what moves they did, it wouldn't have mattered.

I remember watching this mania, i stayed up till 4 in the am and this was a match i looked forward to...and it royally pissed me off. i was 13/14 at the time, and was expecting a match between 2 monsters...this match helped me go to sleep earlier than intended and i wound up missing the main event

I actually quite liked the match. And I think it gets unfairly labelled as the worst match in WM history. Mideon wrestled at WM remember.
I think that if you showed that match to someone who didn`t know the story with Brock and Goldberg and edited the crowd so they sounded into it, you`d get way more positive reviews.
Most people don`t look at the actual match when they think about this, they look at the circumstances.

I guess I was one of the only people that actually respected the match for its in match psychology. It was different, imo because Lesnar and Goldberg respected each others strength so they were timid to start off going at the other person like a bull.
