Taking out all the barriers that exist such as brand separation and what two wrestlers would you choose to be in WWE's current main event. Note that this is only in regards to the main event feud, which receives the most publicity and is therefore the focal point of the company such as the Cena/Edge feud from a while back and the Jericho/Orton feud that looks to be developing. You can even involve other wrestlers as well as the main focus is on two competitors. Also, lets keep it limited to just the current roster, so it can seem at least a wee bit realistic.
I'm not really certain, who I would go with, but one possibility I was thinking of would be Jericho and Nitro, with Jericho as a face and Nitro as a heel. The ring work could be great and the mic work at least on Jericho's end would be outstanding and could bring Nitro into his own. You could even get Punk involved in trying to help Jericho win the WWE title from Nitro (remember its hypothetical so he doesn't have to hold it now) only to be double-crossed by Jericho, which could then set up an excellent triple threat match.

orton/batista, just for the interaction between the two. how about jericho, vs a heel cm punk? during a jericho promo, punk comes out and says something about how he doesnt need to be saved by jericho, and all the great "im better than you" stuff he used to do. i imagine we would see some great promos out of that feud. (and the matches wouldnt be too bad, either )

If booked correctly, I think Shawn Michaels vs. Edge could be "the" major rivalry. The whole feud could be based around Shawn's newfound beliefs and attitude to life, and the contrast to Edge - who is basically playing the same character that Michaels was, ten years ago.
Edge could first try and get HBK to come back over to the "wild side" and join him. The more Shawn is exposed to the things that ruled his life all those years ago, the more tempted he is to revert back to his old ways. Triple H is the constant voice in Shawn's ear, reminding him about his family and his beliefs, trying to tell him to not to give in to Edge's temptation. This confuses Shawn even more, sending him into a downward spiral.
Eventually, all three men are in the ring and Triple H turns on Michaels, forming an alliance with Edge. Michaels then has nobody to turn to, so he seeks help in the form of (heel) Undertaker. Of course, aligning himself with someone like the dark character of 'Taker is worse than ever being with Edge or Triple H, sending Michaels down even further - until he loses everything. In the end, Michaels would have to start from the bottom again, where he finally overcomes his 'demons'.
Yeah, totally went off the point there, but it's an idea I've had for a while.

I don't think HBK/Edge would work all that much, they've gone around and had many matches against one other as recent as this spring. The idea behind it seems interesting, but I'd rather see someone else in that role if that were to happen.
As for the leading feud, I'd say Orton/Jericho as it's a big deal, but then again Orton doesn't really have the aura of a main event guy, at least not to me.

Santino vs Shane McMahon
Pay checks begin to arrive later and later for the undercard, until it leads to a strike. Through a series of hilarious mis-haps, Santino gets chosen as their leader. Awesomeness ensues.

Edge vs. CM Punk. Edge uses Vickie's connection with Estrada to get a surprise match with CM Punk. Edge becomes the ECW champ due to the surprise factor. Punk is pissed and Edge only makes it worse by mocking Punk's beliefs and claiming Punk is ripping Edge off by calling himself "The Straight Edge Superstar" when Edge is straight, Edge is Edge, duh, and Edge is the Rated R Superstar... and the ECW Championship is just the icing on the cake. Edge squashes the ECW jobbers and SD jobbers... never letting them know it's an Extreme Rules until Edge announces it (giving him the advantage). Punk has enough and decides the only way to get Edge's attention is to become a thorn in his side and he begins interrupting his matches, G2S'ing him after matches, jumping him backstage or on the way to the ring, etc.

However, CM Punk definately has the potential to be huge and Edge could work as a great antagonist for him to break through to a larger audience (though I would prefer a heel Jericho myself as stated before). Still, I just don't see WWE promoting the ECW title above the WWE title.

HBK/Taker, leading into WrestleMania, purely based on the last ten minutes or so of this years Royal Rumble. These two would have the best match on the card, and active legends don't get bigger than those two. If doesn't even need a proper story, just two legends going one-on-one, based on 10 years of rivalry to prove who is the very best.
Failing that... Jericho/Edge or Taker/Edge... or Jericho/Taker. Actually, just do Face Taker vs. Tweener Jericho vs. Heel Edge

when cena comes back, and punk gets more developed as a main eventer, a feud between those two would rock.
