Who was maineventing or had a important match at Mania only for the next year to have some throw away match on the card?
Some I came up with...
King Kong Bundy Wrestled Hogan in a Cage Match to Mainevent Wrestlemania 2 Next year Teamed with two midgets agaist Hillbilly Jim and two Midgets
Booker T Wrestled HHH for the World Title at Mania 19 Next year retained the Tag team titles with RVD agaist Garrison Cade and Mark Jindrak, The Dudley Boyz, and La Résistance
I forgot Booker and RVD were even tag champs let alone a tag team, also I forgot Jindrak and Cade were around long enough to make it a Mania.
I know Booker went on to having worse luck being left off of Mania 21, and jobbing to BoogieMan in less then 5 minutes at Mania 22.
Who eles had a great fall from one year to the next? Also who had the biggest jump from one year to the next?
Benoit would be up there going from a throw away tagmatch to winning the world title the next year.

Benoit went from the main-event at XX to the second match on the card at 21. Same with Eddie, who slipped to the first match of the card against Mysterio.

Placement on the card really doesn't matter, sure Mysterio vs. Eddie was the opening but the match wan't a throw away, as for Benoit the 1st MITB seem cool, new, and very important. It also seemed like anyone in the match could have won that thing.

I'd call it a severe drop for Eddie going from a world title win, to wrestling a glorified midget!

Lex Luger.
Wrestling for the WWF Title at Wrestlemania X.
Curtain jerking in a throwaway tag match at the next Mania.
I would say King Kong Bundy, but at least he was facing someone who was actually pretty over with the fans (Hillbilly Jim) while Luger faced The Blu Brothers which had the tag team heat equal to Mike Knox.

How about Shawn Michaels, going from winning the WWF title in the classic ironman match to losing his smile the next year.

Off the top of my head:
Paul Orndorff: from wrestling in the main event of I to curtain jerking in a draw with Muraco the next year.
Ted DiBiase: from wrestling in the main event of IV to a draw with Beefcake the next year.
Randy Savage: from wrestling in the main event of V to losing in a throwaway mixed tag match the next year.
Big Show: from wrestling in the main event of XVI to losing in a lower-card title match the next year.

They could put anybody out there to kick-off WM and the fans would pop.
I would think Chris Jericho had the best rise.
WM X7, opener I-C title match against William Regal. WM X8, defended the "Unified title" against Triple H.

WM X: Bam Bam Bigelow and Luna vs. Doink and Dink
WM XI: Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Lawrence Taylor in the main event

Stone Cold Steve Austin
WM17: Winning the WWF Title in the main event with the Rock, beginning a new part of the McMahon/Austin storyline
Wm18: Wrestling against Scott Hall...in what seemed like kind of a throwaway match? It seemed pretty forgotten compared to Rock/Hogan and the title match, and even the hardcore title shenanigans.

And of course, Cena opening WM XX with Big Show, then winning the world title the next year.

Ric Flair at 22 was in MITB then at 23 he wasn't on (think he might have been in some pre-show battle royale)

Bradshaw:
WMXX - Throwaway 4-team tag match featuring Scotty/Rikishi, the Bashams and Haas/Benjamin.
WM21 - WWE Title match against Cena

Bret Hart: main event in WrestleManias IX and X to wrestling in a lackluster I Quit Match with Bob Backlund in WrestleMania XI. However, he was then in the main event the next year, so it was a huge fall.

Randy Savage: from wrestling in the main event of V to losing in a throwaway mixed tag match the next year. The mixed tag match was actually on a high spot on the card. It was the last match before the interval (IIRC) which in those days was a good spot. It was hyped for weeks leading up to the event and was maybe the second biggest match at that show and it should be noted that a mixed tag match was a pretty big thing in those days. And the pop at the end of the match is really loud too. It may not be as big as being in the main event, but it certainly wasn't throwaway IMO.

Oh. My vote goes to IRS. Main event at Wrestlemania 9, part of a meaningless 10 man tag match at Wrestlemania 10 that never even took place.
