Sometimes that stuff is super loud in person and they want to protect their hearing.
They had pyro at a graduation I went to (outdoor ceremony) at the end, and the first blast was so loud my ears rung; nearly everybody covered their ears for the other blasts.

I must admit, when I went to Raw in June that the pyro was SOOOOO loud. Edge had the first pyro of the night and it was just so unexpected and was the loudest thing I'd ever heard in my life, until Jeff Hardy came out, then until Batista came out.
I've been to a nascar race and had the blue angels fly directly over my head and the WWE pyro is still louder than that.

Yeah, I TOTALLY don't blame the people who cover their ears. That stuff is SOOOO loud. You can feel it like, ridiculously strong in your chest and sinuses too. Damn pyro. I don't know how the wrestlers manage to stand like, right next to it and not die.

I'm one of those people. I have sensitive hearing, makes the pyro SO much more fun.

I still wonder how a wrestler can stand next to it and keep his cool.

I don't cover my ears for everything, but I currently cover my ears for Batista's specifically because it is ridiculously loud. Way louder than anyone else's. I was at a few shows where I didnt cover my ears, and my ears rang the entire next day. That can't be good.
Alternate version of this post: Loud Pyro holds grudges.

I surprised Batista can still hear. His pyro is one of the loudest things I ever heard...

Well, he's lost his hearing already. He's, like, what? 75? 85?

I actually read somewhere that the pyro is silent but they play explosive sound effects to make it a better atmosphere.

I don't cover my ears when the pyros hit. That doesn't mean I can't be scared out of my boots. I still remember the Royal Rumble this year when Taker won. The unexpected ending pyro scared the living crap out of me. And I think my ears were still ringing after I got home. But hey, seeing Taker win the Rumble live was totally worth it. ;D

I don't know how the wrestlers manage to stand like, right next to it and not die. Goldberg, Booker T, and Lashley have have had the most painful pyro, especially Book's. Flames should never be that close

well, it's extremly f***ing loud to be quite honest, and I lissen to crap louder then that on my ipod. Maybe it's the noise itself that gets to me or something. I remmber my first WWF/E event I went to was piro all over and I nearly lost it. I came well prepaired the next Event and heirafter.

Being to many live events sitting by the floor or ramp, I can tell you it is VERY LOUD. I'm sure I f***ed up my hearing plenty already So in a way I don't blame them. I mean, if some little kid brings his parents/grandparents to the event with them, I don't think they are going to like Batista very much before the night's over.

The absolute worst is Kane's pyro because there's no way to know when it is coming. At least with Batista's, you know when to expect the pyro if you watch WWE regularly, and you can block your ears as soon as you see Big Dave get ready to do the dance. But with Kane, the loud explosion is literally the first thing that happens right from the start, so you have no way of knowing that it's gonna happen.
