Just did about an hour of research, looking through magazines, watched multiple clips of 'top' guys and various websites, and came up with this conclusion...if he isn't, then someone else is.

Along with Funk and Flair, top 3 all around of all time...No questions asked. Maybe even the best in ring performer of all time, which is saying a lot.

I never did find Shawn to have the greatest "technical" aspect of wrestling. At times I found him to really oversell many moves that he shouldnt of. The FU of John Cena's in particular that looks like he couldnt hurt a pre-schooler with that finisher. I know Shawn is a great seller but at times found him to just sell too much where it wasnt needed. Shawn in 96 was "spot machine" He was great, overall no doubt. But to say he is the "greatest" is just too subjective. There have just been so many. What shawn had others lacked or what shawn lacked others had. I guess its just what your interpretation of what it takes to be the greatest" is.

One of the best, but every gripe you could bring up with Flair or Bret(5 moves, blah blah) does apply to him, too.
Very good, but in many ways comparable to others.

No.
He certainly is one of the best, but not they best. It's been said his WMX match with Hall was one of the best ever, in addition others say HBK had that match with the ladder. Hall was just in the ring.
An HBK is almost, ususally always a good match. His matches with Perfect, Martel, and Santana weren't so hot, especially when compared to his later stuff. Also, I've always felt the Rockers were lucky to win any matches at all. I never expected them to win when they were in the ring, cept maybe against the Orient Express.
To make a point to my rambling, HBK is one of the greatest, however not the greatest of all time.

This has happened two or three times before, and I always feel the need to correct it. *Ahem* Shawn Michaels is never to be compared to Terry Funk. It violates several universal laws, and doing so brings us all closer to total destruction. Please be more careful with comparisons in the future.

Also, the fact HBK almost never lost of any of his title in the ring, hurts him as well. If it just happened all his title losses were kayfabe surrendings, it would be one thing. However, Shawn just disappeared when asked to lose a title and when he did lose them in a ring, it was to friends or to avoid Taker kicking his ass.
I know backstage stuff shouldn't factor into in-ring performance, but to me, his title "losses" count.

good in ring performer no doubt. greatest? it is hardly a question. i wouldn't put even put his best years ahead of current wrestlers. as long as we are talking strictly in ring work, the answer is definitely a no for the type of match i like to watch. that isn't a knock on michaels, there are just some really good wrestlers out there and there has been

I think so, or at least top 3. I mean, he dragged a near 5 star match out of Kevin Nash, for crying out loud.

Yeah, he is. He can wrestle anyone, any style, and make the match beyond watchable. He could wrestle a pair of khakis into a 4 star match. He can wrestle any type of match and make it an excellent match.

I agree that Michaels is quite possibly the best ever. I mean, I have the From the Vault DVD and the last 4 WMs on DVD, and all the matches are superb. Shawn/Angle and Shawn/Jericho are 2 standouts for me. If your going back, you have HIAC with Taker, WMX with Razor, the man is a genius! I've heard all the backstage stuff like everyone else but I'll overlook it as this man entertains me in every match he's in. He truly is The Showstopper!

Maybe in the top 10, but greatest in-ring performer? Nope. I preferred Steamboat or Bret Hart over him.

Like someones already said, don't remember too many bad HBK matches.
He doesn't believe in half ass performances, definately ONE of the best.

I have a problem with this definition of "performer". Surely you perform however you have to in order to make the match work and get the crowd involved. Some guys have to do a lot, some guys don't. I don't see how someone who needs to work hard to make a match work should be anymore praised than those who don't.
This idea that someone's a better "performer" in wrestling for me is ridiculous. It's like saying that someone at a ballet performance is better than someone else when the two dancers are perhaps fufilling different roles in the performance in order to portray and express to the audience different moods and emotions. If there's a part of a ballet which is deep and thoughtful and the person on stage is slight and sombre and slow in his movements nobodies going to say "This blows, the guy who was jumping around in the first act was better".
Also it's a very personal thing. I think Undertaker has perhaps one of the greatest presence in the ring which for me always makes his in-ring performance that much more enjoyable.

HBK has nothing on Frank Gotch!! Pimpin'. For HBK not to get into the WWE's Hall Of Fame, he's going to have to mess up again big-time.
