Sure, Festus is being pushed as an unstoppable, yet awkward, monster, but we, and his opponents, have already figured out his weakness. Once he and Jesse mee the enevitable, a match where an opponent just keeps ringing a bell, where we'll he go with his character?

His mind will snap and he'll start wearing a leather mask and hanging out in boiler rooms.

Maybe they'll do a thing where someone rings the bell too much and he gets "Stuck" in Psycho mode.

Festus: School cafeteria worker. Get in line, wait your turn, and then wake up seconds later. You just got served!

I think it's doomed to fail because Festus plays the part well, it's entertaining in small doses, and the crowd likes it for what it is. Recent history (Boogeyman and Eugene) seems to suggest that the WWE will misinterpret the fan support for something greater and then feel the need to put Festus in too many segments, push him down our throats, and ultimately overexpose him until the fans stop caring.

I love his intensity, but the gimmick probably has to go.

He'll just disappear for a few months, and reappear as Boogeyman's masked brother.

i think the GIMMICK is going to fail eventually... no way it could be a long-term thing... but i can see Festus sticking around for awhile after they drop the gimmick

One day the heel's gonna ring the bell during the match and put Festus in his comatose state.
However the heel didn't think about the bell ending the match, which proceeds to Festus going BANANA~!

No, the gimmick is not "doomed to fail."
It's a great, easy-to-understand gimmick for grown-up marks and kids alike, and it has good storyline potential (even if most of those storylines are cartoon-like). For a company that's trying to appeal to families and also appeal to a larger audience (to fight shrinking TV ratings), that's actually what's needed.

Who knows, maybe too much bell ringing will turn him into Freakin Deacon.

I don't see it working for more than a year or two until the fans either get sick of it or pretty much ignore him completely. Comedy gimmicks only have so much of a lifespan to them.

I love Festus. Honestly I think they should drop the whole thing where he goes crazy when he hears a bell. They should just say that he is a guy who normally is an effervescent and fun-loving guy (Jesse's words, not mine), but he is all business in the ring. They don't have to get so literal and say that he turns into a psycho when he hears a bell. This way the character would not have this inescapable weakness, and they can just focus on Festus being a funny character outside the ring, but who dominates in the ring.
