I ask this, because I'm wondering when the sale to Vince was finalized.
Couldn't the final Nitro be considered working for Vince?

Technically, yes. He would've been working for the WWF at the final Nitro.
But he's never actually been on a WWF/E show.

Would he have been paid by Vince for that one show? I know he had just bought-out the WCW, but Sting was still under contract with Ted Turner.

Well, he was paid by Time Warner and not Vince for the final Nitro but, Vince and his guys were in charge. Tough one.

Actually they weren't. The WWF employees were just there on the night of the final Nitro because Shane was supposed to show up on the program. Everyone in WCW was still under contract to AOL Time-Warner. The Buyouts of those contracts didn't happen until a few days later. So strictly speaking, Sting's never worked for Vince. He was never under contract to him.

I would think it all comes down to who signs your check.

Booker wasn't even included in the sale. He took a buyout from Time Warner and signed with WWE, which is why he didn't show up until the King of the Ring.
