The Iron Man match is called the hardest match in WWE to do, telling a story without a gimmick, and to keep fans attention for that long.
Sure any wrestler could be thrown into an Iron Match match, with the right build up and hype someday we might be able to see Val Venis vs. Trevor Murdoch. But we know that won't happen. This match is really for the most over guys on the roster.
On the other hand an hour in a WWE ring can really kick your ass, Flair and Taker seem to maxxed out at about 20 minutes, and even Batista looks winded after ten.
Also highlighting your talents in WWE for an hour can really show how untalented you really are, who wants to see Orton put someone in a headlock for a half hour.
So who in WWE right now do you think is able to do an Iron Man match based on how over they are, endurance, and skills.
The list is a lot shorter then it was a few years ago.

I don't think even with the right build that fans would care for Venis vs. Murdoch personally.
I know Punk could do one as he's wrestled several 1-hour matches before his tenure in WWE.
Still, I'd rather not see them as you know nothing is going to happen until the last 10 or so minutes. I'd like a match that you don't know if it's going to go an hour beforehand like the HBK/Cena match for earlier this year.

HHH Shawn Jericho Cena Matt Hardy (borderline, in terms of place on the card AND I'm not sure he could pull it off) MVP (see Hardy, but with more doubts in place)
Obviously there are lots of other people that COULD pull out a great Iron Man Match, but I'm not sure if they'd be ready for it as yet. Punk could certainly do it, but he's a C-show guy.

I don't think even with the right build that fans would care for Venis vs. Murdoch personally. Yeah, I know. But I had to make some sort of comment about anyone could be in an Iron Man Match. Before I got replys saying... "Well anyone can be Iron Man Match..."

Pretty much every guy under the 275-300 pounds mark and under 40 years of age COULD do an iron man match.
The real question is: who could wrestle an INTERESTING and WATCHABLE iron man match?
HBK, Cena and Edge are the only guys I'd pay to watch. Add in Jericho, once he's done readjusting himself in the ring. About Triple H, I'm a bit worried about his post-injury stamina.
Probably many more guys could pull it off (MVP, Matt Hardy, Punk, Morrison) butI doubt they'd go to the distance keeping the match crisp and/or interesting.

The obvious answer is Randy Orton. Rest holds equals time killer for legend killer. Orton. Think of the restholds You beat me to it. Blast having to step away for a few minutes!

About Triple H, I'm a bit worried about his post-injury stamina. The same HHH that just put together three matches at No Mercy?

Did people not read what the thread was actually about? It's also based on how over you are... granted, Punk is over on ECW, but that's not much, really... I think the question is more about who there'd be a point in booking in an iron man match, which isn't many people, as they're not going to waste that much time on people that aren't at that kind of level.
Has anyone got a list of the WWF/WWE Iron Man matches?

I'm sure there are a lot more wrestlers capable of giving off an Iron Man match then we give them credit it for. For example, I'm more than positive Finlay could last a good hour. You'd be surprised how long Randy Orton could last. His match with RVD in 2004 comes to mind. While it didn't last an hour, we saw the Legend Killer do so moves that we hadn't seen before, and well I'm sure an Iron Man match would bring out the best in him.

See? They're only going to use the top guys for an Iron Man match - much as we know that Punk and Shelton could go an hour, they're neither of them on that kind of level... Punk is far closer, and he's nowhere near.

My brain thinks this way...
People the WWE would let do an iron man match because fans would care.
Cena, Orton, Edge, HHH, Michaels, Batista, Taker, and Jericho.
Out of those the only one in my opinion that would not make enjoyable iron man match given the right planning.. is Batista. An iron man match has to be planned out so well people with good grasps of psychology in the ring are the ones that have to do it otherwise it gets boring and has no dramatic feel to it. However, to make an iron man match seem real, you have to have the competitors in the beginning start off slow, pacing themselves. A suplex might keep them down for 10 seconds in the beginning. Now as the match goes on.. a suplex should keep you down for incremently longer peroids because a suplex when you're full of energy is different than when you're drained.
Really what it comes down to is having a really good agent help plan out the match and have the wrestlers really listen to them.

A resthold, or headlock is a very important part of any long match, especially iron man. I mean I was just watching Kenta Kobashi's return match and there were numerous headlocks and rear chin locks throughout. Look at the first Iron man match.... The first 30 minutes consisted of Bret putting HBK into a headlock then flipping him over, then working in the headlock on the mat. So, don't hold that shit against Orton in the least. Orton vs Edge, Orton vs HHH, Orton vs HBK would be fantastic Iron Man Matches if you ask me.
