I might be crazy but do they pipe in fake cheers on Smackdown shows? They never pan to the cheering fans but I notice that the fans in the front rows aren't saying or doing anything when it sounds like the fans are going nuts but it could probably be the fans in the back.

100% true. It happens on virtually every taped WWE show. Pay close attention to SNME, or when Raw is taped and aired at a later date. What's horrible is that they've been using the exact same set of piped in cheers since about 2000 or so, and it is just SO obvious.

But are some of the cheers real at least?
And is this the reason why we don't complain about dead crowds on Smackdown?

Occasionally, yes.
When they pan the crowd...it obviously isn't fake. Also, some of the chants taking place during the action doesn't really allow them to pan...but if they're trying to get a new guy over (Palumbo) they'll pipe in some cheers and talk them up to get people to notice them.

WWE uses the fact that Smackdown is taped to their advantage in editing. You can tell who's really getting cheered by crowd reaction (or lack thereof). Crowd reaction is the reason I'm suspicious of Palumbo's supposed "overness".

See: The Hogan-esque pop the MSG crowd gave Linda Mcmahon this past August without actually standing up, or opening their mouths.

See above, re: Last night's "KELLY" chant on ECWI'd be more likely to believe that, if they hadn't shown people in the background chanting it. Freaked me out.

Did anybody go to a Smackdown show live and noticed the differences between the crowd reactions live and on TV?

I remember not to long ago on an episode of Smackdown they had a match with one of the Major brothers versus either Deuce or Domino, and halfway through the match you could hear people chanting boring. I guess what i'm trying to say is why keep those chants in if they are going to edit crowd reaction for other matches?

Well, there is a pretty strong rumour that, when people were starting to get sick of The Rock, they had to start piping in the "Rocky" chants. I had a friend of mine go to an episode of Raw, and he told me that while the actual crowd was chanting "Rocky sucks", the audio guys were piping in "Rocky" even louder to drown them out.

Did anybody go to a Smackdown show live and noticed the differences between the crowd reactions live and on TV? I was at the smackdown where Edge cashed in his MITB against taker, and Edge got a freaking mega Hogan Jesus Pop to the max. Then on smackdown you just hear the same old fake hollow boo sounds. So lame.

I remember one episode of Smackdown! where the Big Show had to leave because he lost some match. The crowd started doing the traditional "nah nah nah nah hey hey hey good bye" chant but they were doing it perfectly together nonstop without the chant starting to fade or anything. It was blatantly obvious that the WWE had piped it in.

I remember back in the day, there was a Bob Holly match, and after every move there was fake crowd reaction. The worst being the "Whoooo!" (usually heard after a knife-edged chop) after a body slam.
