Whenever WWE guys try to stay in character while dealing with the mainstream media, they always end up looking like morons and are very easy to mock and ridicule.

I think if you look deep in your heart, you can forgive the mainstream TV talk show hostess for not taking a fight between a zombie and a sumo wrestler seriously.

I'm sure Regis understood the hyperbole and showmanship involved in pro wrestling at the time, and played along as such. Kathy Lee couldn't be bothered with playing along. But is it really any more contrived than any soap opera that Gifford was on?

It has nothing to with a zombie fighting a sumo wrestler. It's a simple matter of having a shred of respect for the people you invite on your show, which that snooty bitch is obviously too good for.

Kathy Lee was never in a soap opera. Kelly was... Kathy Lee Croasby was a singer, Thae she was a Gifford and had a little sissy boy named cody...buhhh.

Well, to be honest, I couldn't stand to watch it all the way through...and while Kathy Lee could've probably tried to put on a show and take things seriously...it's not like the audience wasn't giggling at these two the moment they walked in. They were really out of their element in that environment.

If anybody's to blame for anything here, it would be whoever booked Taker and Paul to be on that show. How in the world could anyone have expected that interview to play out any other way? If they wanted to hype the match on a mainstream show, have Vince or another neutral on-air personality go on to talk about the match and view a few select clips from the feud. Anyway, I think this lesson has somewhat been learned since then, as WWE has somewhat gotten away from such overly-unrealistic storylines and characters (there are a few exceptions, but most of it nowadays is somehow plausible.)

It's all about finding the right personality to go on certain talk shows. For instance, The Genius was awesome on Regis/Kathy Lee. Weird stuff like this was better suited for Conan (Goldust!).

In his book, Heenan said when him and Rude were on, Rude chased her up those stairs in the background, attempting to kiss her. She ran up the stairs, knowing it was a set. When she got to the top of the stairs that led no where, she said, "Please don't kiss me! Frank will be mad' Rude said, "I wasn't gonna kiss you. I just wanted to see how far I could chase you."

Kayfabe is dead. Let the guys promote things like normal people. We'll still watch and maybe other people might consider it once the Veil of Cheese is gone.

The only TV host who seemed to play along with kayfabe back then was Arsenio Hall, and that's probably because he was a fan. Every other show had kind of a condescending tone with wrestlers.

I'm talking more of today, when he still insists on sending Kane to movie premiers in his wrestling trunks.

I'm talking more of today, when he still insists on sending Kane to movie premiers in his wrestling trunks. Yeah that was odd, I would've had him in his attire that he wore in the movie. I don't know about him, but I would be embarrassed walking into a movie premiere with no shirt and just my wrestling tights on.

That cracked me up - they had to give him a movie T-shirt to keep him from freezing inside.
If they could get Foley to show up in a suit, I think they could've managed one for him.
And it's a Catch 22 with things like the Kathy Lee clip - in order for the mainstream world to find out about wrestling, they had to do shows like this. But watching stuff like this, would anyone who wasn't into wrestling actually dig it?
Wrestling is always perceived as goofy by the outside world. In the time of strict Kayfabe, things that were normal inside wrestling were... well... this. If you were gonna deal with people like Reeg and Kathy, you probably would do well not to send the dead one and the squeaky-voiced mortician to deal with them. There was no way this would be taken straight. And that was a bit of a detriment to the character, which wasn't very silly in any sense of the word.
And Kathy Lee is a jerk regardless.

I remember when Diesel was on, and Kathie asked him why, since he's getting beaten up, doesn't he have any bruises anywhere?
"Lots of make-up", he said.
