It seems that Jericho was not as over upon returning as many felt he should have been. This could have to do with the timing of his return. Should Y2J have waited until the 15th anniversary Raw so that his return would be more significant?
On one hand, he could have taken advantage of the excitement and nostalgia of the fans created by seeing other old superstars and he would have been the icing on the cake. People would already be excited because of the hype for Raw's anniversary, rather than him just turing up on a normal Raw. Also, because of the special occassion, more people would have tuned in to see it.
On the other hand, his return may have been watered down as so many other stars returned on the same night. Also, we'd already been waiting a few months by the time he did return and if we had to wait any longer might have lost interest.
What do you think?

We saw many other wrestlers get relatively weak pops that would have gotten big ones, simply because there were so many people coming back. That's not a big deal for one time returns but for someone you want to push as a top face I'd say it's best to let the spotlight shine only on them when they come back.

No. Why? With everything going on, he wouldn't have gotten the exposure the angle needed? It does seem a bit weak right now, but a debut last night would've had him lost in the shuffle of nostalgia and merryment.

its good to have him back, but it wasn't a shock due to the IWC. 10 years ago everyone would've gone absolutely crazy, but we've pretty much known he was coming back for the past year.

Maybe if they started the save us 222 thing like a few weeks later then it wouldn't be so bad because I would have gone crazy because they dragged it on for too long.

It's not about the timing of the comeback... it's about the comeback itself.
Let's face it, Jericho went away in a rather pathetic way, following a one-sided feud against Cena, after more or less three years of a moderately interesting midcard tenure, following a not-so-successful main event run (and NO, Steph's dog and HHH's "burial" aren't the main reasons to the half-failure).
Y2J was booked weakly from the very first night as Undisputed Champion, and it all went slowly downhill from there. Some high points (v HBK, v Benoit) but in the end, he was always the one drawing the short straw.
Long story short: how was a long-time midcarder, coming back after two years of hiatus, supposed to "save us"?
The crowd popped because Jericho is a well-recognized name/face, but WWE didn't have full faith in him the first time, and they won't have it the second time. And without a monster push, the crowds aren't gonna cheer Jericho to the moon, not against Orton anyway.

No... he should have came back a month after the promos started playing when people still cared... vignettes of his past accomplishments would have also helped, but would have ruined the "surprise"
