In 1997:
Wwe official: “Paul Heyman, Metallica will NOT work for free.”
(Official slams the door and leaves.)
Paul: “D’oh!”

This sounds like that "Macauley Culkin was supposed to be Tyler Fullington" story from Dark Side of the Ring, as in, no real chance.

I assumed they didn't license Enter Sandman because 1)it would have been expensive as hell, and 2)they knew they weren't doing much of anything with ECW pretty early on. They cleared it for ECW One Night Stand 2005.

Someone finally asked a member of Metallica about the Hogan thing a few years ago. He said he never met Hogan and that the band weren't wrestling fans. So yeah, no way they offered a free show. Also? Napster eventually sponsored a Metallica concerr, so they don't hold grudges. It's business.

Metallica doing something for free in the nineties? I'm going to file this under doubtful. Oddly enough I just watched this yesterday and it's suddenly relevant to the convo. Good Lord this was cringey You wouldn't download a car."

funny that this same clip pop up on my TY recommendations. I find it hard to believe that was true and the reason. I mean Metallica in the 90s doing anything for free as you said its a stretch. I doubt that kept them from getting the song years later. Being in 2003 summerslam The PPV theme was St Anger. The DVD had the music video for it. Metallica charges a lot for there music to be used. So to use it for DVD and network stuff would be an insane price.

Yeah, Metallica hates WWE after Vince blew them off (uh, phrasing...) in 1997, that's why St Anger is the official theme song for Summerslam 2003! And The Memory Remains was used for the "end of an era" match. (So that makes two Britgirls who can be linked to WWE: Marianne Faithfull here, the other's Petula Clark, whose Downtown can be heard on one of their video game ads)

And WWE using Now That We’re Dead for the Boneyard Match. Yep, Metallica clearly wants nothing to do with WWE.

Why the f*** would Sandy know this anyway? I'm not certain Sandman knew what was happening directly in front of him in 1997

Metallica were at peak cultural relevance in 97 during the Load/Reload years they were not playing for free lol and also they have worked with WWE even before ONS like St. Anger being the Summerslam theme song as someone said and it was pushed hard by WWE

The only part of the story I believe is that McMahon had no idea who Metallica was.

As a long term Metallica fan, shortly after St Anger (the album) came out, James Hetfield starting getting therapy and rehab for all his issues (alcohol, PTSD from friend death/burned on stage/abusive parenting/etc etc) rather than internalising them up and self-medicating. The songs he wrote as a mess in the 80s and 90s were better, but he himself seems to be in a much healthy situation this century most of the time.

From what I remember from Some Kinda Monster he was getting help during the making of St. Anger.
