Where do you stand on the Sandman's claim that Metallica wanted to play for free at SummerSlam 1997, but Vince blew them off because he didn't know who they were? And that's the reason why the WWE couldn't get the rights for Enter Sandman for the ECW reboot in 2006.

Metallica doing something for free in the nineties?
I'm going to file this under doubtful.

Was Hulk Hogan on good terms with WWE around that time?
I would think if they REALLY wanted the rights to Enter Sandman they could have had Hogan ask his old Pals to do him a solid

I very much doubt it. Whether or not Vince knew who they were, I don't imagine he'd shoot down something like that, especially in 1997 where the WWF was still straining to get back out of the red. It's really goddamn implausible he'd turn down such a golden opportunity when he really needed it still.

WWE have had all sorts of celebrities over the years that I guarantee Vince had never heard of and you're telling me he'd turn down Metallica? Highly unlikely.
I also don't know why Metallica would play for free. The story just doesn't make sense.

Even KISS when they were REALLY angling for every bit of crossover appeal they could gather up from every avenue still held WCW up for quite a bit of money first, so I imagine someone who probably had a stronger bargaining position weren't going to do it, especially since it isn't like big bands were hounding the WWF for such a spot when they were much more successful the next couple of years.

Yeah, Metallica hates WWE after Vince blew them off (uh, phrasing...) in 1997, that's why St Anger is the official theme song for Summerslam 2003!

Great, the boards now owe Lars $30,000 for mentioning his band 11 times.
weirdly we owe Kiss that for them being mentioned once.... shit, $60,000 now.

Metallica doesn't play for free if you're the members' kids asking to be sung a lullaby. No way.

Good Lord this was cringey and then the founder of Napster was on stage at hte MTV awards wearing a Metallica shirt... saying something like thanks I borrowed it from a friend.

I assumed they didn't license Enter Sandman because 1)it would have been expensive as hell, and 2)they knew they weren't doing much of anything with ECW pretty early on.

One simple thing everyone needs to remember: Sandman drinks. Like, a lot. You're telling me he could recall something that happened back in 1997? Unlikely.
