It seems on these forums that there's a large divide over which promotion a fan can watch. If you like WWE, you hate ROH, TNa and Chikara. If you like TNA, you loathe WWE and ROH. If you like ROH and Chikara, anyone who watches WWE or TNA is a moron.
My question is....HUH?
In the 80's, I watched WWF and NWA. In the 90's, I watched WWF, WCW and ECW. Vastly different products, but all with something worth watching.
Where did this blind "This is my promotion and your taste sucks if you don't like it too" mentality come from exactly? I'm not trying to start some huge argument, I'm genuinely curious. Can't we agree to disagree? Can't we all just...get along?

It really started in the '90s when people started to get tattoos of the wrestling promotions on themselves

I don't get that mentality either. I prefer TNA to WWE/ROH/Etc, but I don't care what anyone anyone else thinks.

IT seems like if you have any criticims of a product like I do with ROH you're deemed a hater, even though I do enjoy the roster and some of the matches, the angles are okay, but not really mind blowing. I've watched NWA, WWF, WCCW (don't know how, but I remember Iceman King Parsons and Channel 54 in LA showing WCCW), WCW, ECW, AAA, CMLL. When I got the internet, I actually watched NJPW and AJPW religously oh there were sites who put up matches. Kensuke vs. Kawada was my first forray into the whole mega event dream match. Seriously I marked for KEnsuke's domination in WCW, and KAwada before then I watched 2 matches of his the tag match with Taue against Kobashi/Kawada, and the match vs. SAbu. awesome. I've seen the six sided ring forever, and I enjoyed TNA lifting it from AAA. It really adds a different dimension to a match. I don't get why TNA doesn't try to go for the same types of camera angles that AAA does, as the angles AAA uses actually makes matches come off better. TNA's cameras ruin a match because of the awkward angles, cutaways, and nonsense zoom ins, the only times they have great camera work is during Lock Down. eheh anyways... If there was wrestling on TV I watched it, even if it was XPW..god that promotion sucked. I don't get the whole if you like WWF you're an idiot, if you hate TNA that makes you a moron, if you like ROH you have to hate everything WWE/TNA, but love everything from JApan. If you're a ROHbot any wrestler isn't good until he steps into an ROH ring. That included Kobashi AND Liger in terms of this one rabid ROHbot on a message board i frequent. People hate TNA for zany booking decisions. People love TNA because it's not WWE and it's on TV. People love the indies because it's not mainstream, in the same way people like underground hip hop because it's not main stream. Well in that case most main stream rap does suck. People hate indies because of a bad experience with one show, IE: Production Values sucked, the crowd sucked, the show sucked. And they base that one experience on all other shows. People Hate WWE because it's the big leagues. People love WWE because it's the Big leagues. If they hate, let 'em hate, I drop ya whole clan Lay yo' ass DOWN for the three second TAN all you needed to put was those last two lines and this post would have been twice as effective.

I grew up watching the marathon of wrestling on Saturday nights in Atlanta hosted by Joe Pedicino, Bonnie Blackstone, and Uncle Sammy. It started with WWF Superstars, then the North Georgia Wrestling Alliance, then USWA, and then a whole load of other wrestling shows that went on into the morning.

It's the internet, a system in which people can anonymously state anything they want and not be threatened by the concept of being personally confronted over it. That's bound to give anyone something of an ego boost.
The fact of the matter is, if you're a fan of a certain wrestling promotion, anyone else you really don't pay much attention to. If you hear about something bad that happens within the company you don't watch, great! You've got something to talk about, something to tie the day together. If it sounds bad on paper, chances are that's all you'll need to comment on it. If you hear about an achievement of a certain wrestling company that you don't watch, what can you do? You can't agree with the sentiment that a match was five stars if you haven't seen the match. You can't agree that a fued was nicely-planned if you weren't there for the planning.
It's the same for the so-called "console wars". The "System X Sucks!!! I've never played it because it sucks, but I'll never play it because it sucks, and I just know it sucks!". Same thing with wrestling. If someone hears rumours about something that hasn't happened yet about something they've never seen, they're able to twist it to their will and use it as fuel to boost their own ego and make them feel comfortable that they're with the "winning side". Remember talk of WWE signing someone 6'11? I saw so many people bash WWE over it, "HE SUCKS!!!! FIRE HIM NOW!!!" "HE'S GOING TO HOLD DOWN THE GOOD GUYS WITH HIS SUCKY OFFENSE!!!" "VINCE JUST LOVES HIM FOR HIS SIZE!". What did anyone know about this guy? Absolutely nothing. His height, weight, and name. No-one had seen him wrestle, but everybody "knew" he had no wrestling skill.
The fact of the matter is, every promotion has its fanboys/girls, and every promotion will do something bad every once in a while. No jokes about WWE/TNA/ROH doing something bad "all teh time LOLZ", please.
Everyone complained when MVP debuted. What happened? Now he's a respected US and Tag champion, loved by many on the board.
Everyone complained when Takeshi Morishima won the ROH title. What happened? He became known as a dominant monster champ, gaining the respect of many a board member here.
Everyone complained when TNA regained Vince Russo. What happened? Bound for Glory 2007.
The bad things stick out in the non-fanboys minds, and the good things get swept under the rug. Some promotions will never be good enough for these fanboys, who feel they'd be betraying their company if they watch the other company's wrestling. It's just the way things are. That doesn't mean I don't think this board could do with some civility sometimes, but whatever.
I love wrestling, and it is in my opinion that every single wrestling promotion can give me a great example, so I don't choose to allign myself with anyone. I stand up for every promotion being bashed if the bashing has no reason. I can also point out the faults of the promotion and speak hypothetically about things that haven't happened yet if I have the neccesary details, otherwise a "wait and see" attitude really helps.
Bottom line here is live and let live. If you think a wrestling promotion is terrible, don't watch it, don't comment on it, and if it does go under, don't point and laugh. No-one likes anyone who says "I told you so". You don't look clever, you look like a dick.
I hope that's helped.

Can't we agree to disagree? Can't we all just...get along? Egos, Egos, Egos. All anyone on the internet wants is to feel like they're part of an exclusive little club where they're smarter than everyone else, where they "get" what the rest of us are "too stupid" to understand. And there's no middle ground. And that sucks.

I agree with Joekishi on this. Back when I started watching (around '88) I watched WWF, Crockett/WCW, Memphis, AWA, World Class/USWA, and whatever terrible local promotion would have a tv show. I just loved it...some more than others (I could never get too into the AWA).
My hatred of the Atlanta Braves was because of wrestling. Saturday nights at 5:05pm was MY time to watch some Crockett, only to see that half the time it was delayed because of a freakin Braves game.
WHY COULDN'T YOU HAVE LOST FASTER DALE MURPHY!?!?

No clue how the Chikara people got thrown into that, but whatever. Most of the people here who are fans of one are fans of the other. Or conversely, ROH and Chikara are (by far) the two most talked about indies here. Anyway...as someone who is a fan of ROH, Chikara, and WWE (I don't really care for TNA, but want to see it succeed) I can say that many of us here don't love one and hate on the other. You just have to look for us.

It's because the people that actually has to choose sides (not including those who don't like something for real reasons) are the ones to yell the loudest and be the most annoying.
