Anything is salvageable see Resident Evil 4. But I'm voting Megaman since he is not in Smash Bros. If you mean completely change the series from what it originally was, and this includes plot, atmosphere, and gameplay, just to "reinvent" the series and get in a new audience(that the series actually DIDN'T need), then yes, anything can be "salvaged." Resident Evil didn't need to be salvaged....it is one of the top 25 selling gaming franchises across the world(and this is without calculating in RE4's sales). Capcom screwed with what made all the games before RE4 great and now the series is down a path that doesn't look good. Each game now looks to have some new gimmick(yes gimmick) to make it stand out from the previous games. For example, RE4 introduced smart enemies, the new camera angle, and the aiming system. RE5 will be based in the sunlight and deal with heat(oh yeah, like THAT fits with the dark theme of the series where the only real scare factor of the games was not knowing what was down those dark halls.

All I know is that the Megaman Costume and Shooter unlock in Dead Rising is awesome. I look forward to a 3-D Megaman game.

My only problem with another Megaman is how contrived the boss guys must be be now. The Cobalt Platypus? Wally The Iron Willed Walrus? Dirty Screwdriver Man?

Yeah, Mega-man died with the NES. Okay, Mega Man X, but really, who cared? And six games should be more than enough for the rest of time. Given that they are so fricken hard. But seriously, Mega Man is just Metroid as Super Mario Brothers was to Super Mario Brothers 3. The franchise could be revived.
Sonic is still around. It's just really hard to run in 3-D.

The scariest part of the game, the "Oven Man", is nothing but a cheap jump scare, which are lame. 3) Ok, this one doesn't suck, but without #2, this doesn't exist, so it sucks only by association.

Koda, if anything, Capcom needs to be commended for taking a different turn for a series that was at risk of turning stale. RE4 is already a modern classic, anyway.
As for the question at hand, Sonic is dead to me. Sega of Japan screwed the pooch royally on the franchise YEARS ago. Hell, you could almost tell in Sonic 3 that, while it was still great, something was amiss.
I'll never understand how they were gift-wrapped a buffet of potentially great characters from Sega of America (you had the Freedom Fighters and ultra-evil Robotnik from the SatAM series, and even the goofy ones from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog), and they tossed them ALL out the door in favor of Amy Rose, Big the Cat, and the worst of them all, Shadow.
Screw Sega for ruining Sonic.

Screw Sega for ruining Sonic. Risk of turning stale? The Resident Evil series was nowhere near being "stale". If not changing the basic premise and gameplay for a game series for all but one game is a risk of being stale, then the Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, and Mario series are also running the risk of being stale. Resident Evil was not in any real risk of being stale. Capcom found a fanbase with the series and that fanbase bought millions of copies of most of the RE series(the FPS games in the series left much to be desired). Don't take it wrong, I LOVE Resident Evil 4 as a stand alone game, but as a RESIDENT EVIL game, it sucks. If it was titled anything else and was not connected to Resident Evil in any way, I would've been 100% cool with it, but as it is, the game excels at being a game, and a damn fine one at that, but it fails at being a Resident Evil game. Hell aside from the healing herbs, Umbrella, Ada Wong, Albert Wesker, Leon Kennedy, and the title, the game pretty much is its own entity.

Mega-Man. As bad as Sonic is (The 360 Sonic was awful. I couldn't play the demo for more then 60 seconds), has Mega-Man ever had a good 3-D game like Sonic? (Sonic Adventure.)

Nobody said it DID get stale, just that the risk was there. Besides, games do well to branch out. It's not like movies, where having more than one sequel is never a guarantee. You can have tons of games in a series, so why not try different things for awhile?

Besides, games do well to branch out. It's not like movies, where having more than one sequel is never a guarantee. You can have tons of games in a series, so why not try different things for awhile? Again, this applies to Nintendo's big franchises. Have they changed much in the last few years? Aside from the Metroid series, no. I'm all for Capcom trying different things with the RE series, but when they say the changes they are making are going to be permanent for now(all the RE games from RE5 onward will have the control scheme and camera angle of RE4, that is until Capcom decides to change it up, though I doubt they ever will) it really peeves me. Though...I guess my real hate for RE4 as a RE game is that it brought so many bandwagon gamers into the series. What I mean is, so many people who hated EVERY RE game before RE4 suddenly become people who've liked the series since the first game(trust me, I've experienced several people who are like this). I'm a true RE fan and when all these wannabe fans came slithering in I just wanted to hurt something.
