To everyone saying 'wussy padding'.. You do realize when you get dropped on your head, it hurts a whole lot more with that 'wussy padidng' right? So should they all start calling it pointless, stupid padding instead?

Please. Just look at hooliganism.
Soccer's so boring that the people in attendance have to arrange fights before and after the games just to keep things interesting.

I like American football. It's what I grew up on.
I only watch soccer during the World Cup (pretty much the only time I know it's on, since almost no one talks about MLS. And even then, the MLS sucks.)
Fox Sports Net will occasionally show UEFA League soccer. I'll watch that sometimes.

I became a fan of soccer when I toured Spain in 1999 and was fortunate enough to see La Liga action live. It is a great sport, INDEED. But I see American football as a metaphor of life itself, after reading the "Commitment To Excellence" by Vince Lombardi, the legendary coach who grew up here in Brooklyn, NY. ;D Here it is... "I owe most everything in my life to football, in which I have spent the greater part of my life. And I have never lost my respect, my admiration, and my love for what I consider a great game. And each Sunday, after the battle, one group savors victory and the other group lives in the bitterness of defeat. The many hurts seem a small price to have paid for having won, and there is no reason at all that is adequate for having lost. To the winner there is 100% elation, 100% laughter, and 100% fun; and to the loser there is only a 100% resolution and 100% determination. And it's a game, I think, a great deal like life in that it demands a man's personal commitment be towards excellence and towards victory, even though you know that ultimate victory can never be won. Yet it must be pursued with all of one's might. And each week there's a new encounter, each year a new challenge. But all of the rings and all of the money and all of the color and all of the display, they linger only in the memory. The spirit, and the will to win and the will to excel, these are the things that endure and these are the qualities that are so much more important than any of the events that occasion them. And I'd like to say that the quality of any man's life has got to be the full measure of that man's personal commitment to excellence and to victory, regardless of what field he may be in."

I've watched both, and to be perfectly honest with you, soccer bores the hell out of me. I'll watch my nephew play it this spring, and I'll cheer for him, but it's not my bag.

Vince Lombardi was always Da Man, wasn't he? I like reading his quotes. For the 75th anniversary team, they had this show for the people named to the team. During that show, Brian Dennehy(sp?) read one of his old speeches. It almost brought a tear to my eye it was done so well.

I personally enjoy american football better. Its not that i don't get soccer...I do. I kind of put it in with hockey. They're both hard as hell to play, but lack the science that goes into american football. Yeah, i said science.

Woah, woah, woah....let's all just wait a second here! I think we're forgetting the real greatest form of football. That of course being.... GAELIC FOOTBALL!!! *Kicks ball over for a point, then downs a pint of Guinness whil "Amhrán na bhFiann" explodes over intercom* What's that? No-one's ever heard of it? Yeah.....it sucks. Given what's happening down your end of the country I'm not shocked by this... Actually, since Gaelic football pre-dates bith Gridiron AND Soccer, it is "proper" football. We will not stand for civility in this thread young man! Take your mature attitude & go elsewhere!

I don't get the arrogance of calling it 'proper' football. I'm fine with calling our sport American football, and referring to your own as football when you're discussing it, but the whole 'proper' thing sounds ridiculously elitist. I'm not a huge fan of soccer myself, but I understand that alot of people are.
