I think it's amazing that there are hundereds of independent movies made every year, but when two movies come out years apart and reach a similar level of success they're both "the usual indie nonsense." Indie movies are suffering from the same misuse of labeling as "emo."

I think it's odd that because people don't know someone like JUNO they dismiss the entire movie. Because they don't know anyone like JUNO then she can't possibly exist and the movie must be awful.
Way to be closed-minded folks.

I've said it once, I'll say it again:
- Its quirky for the sake of being quirky.
- It makes no bones that its a quirky Indie flick. The way every character acted, it was if they knew they were acting in an indie flick, and thus laid it on as thick as possible with the quirky behavior. In fact, the actors don't even act, they just spout out quirky lines, and I waited for them to just look at the screen, into the audience, to see if they got a chuckle out of us for approval.
Thus, why I cannot stand JUNO. I know people like that exist, a few of them went to my high school. But they didn't live life as if they were part of a cheaply made indie flick, unlike every single character in JUNO.

If I ever needed to use a movie to describe what an average 3 star film is I'd use Juno.

I'll tell you what...
I usually hate, I repeat, HATE indy movies and "flavour of the months" flicks I usually despise movies about social issues and inter-class/inter-age interaction
So I was fearing Juno being the usual "immature blue collar girl is better than upper-class rich snobs" stuff, basically a huge pat to the back of anti-establishment and anti-whatever ideas.
To be honest, my biggest fear was Juno being a crossover between Seventh Heaven and American Beauty.
Instead I was pleasantly surprised.
The pregnancy issue is treated in a very lighthearted way, probably a tad too much... but that makes the movie more enjoyable. The adoptive couple look like the usual weird rich people with a façade of respectability, but they do have problems and are kinda normal in their own strange way.
Sure, Juno is a lot more mature and witty than your usual 16 years old, and some references seem a bit forced, but hey, she's the odd ball anyway, so it kinda fits her character.
All in all, I enjoyed it. Probably it's not God's gift to cinephiles, but it was much better than I expected.

I liked Juno.
Then again, Jason Bateman was miscast, since as soon as I saw him, I was awaiting some good, quick-witted comedy.
And I was disappointed.
Other than that though, I wouldn't go in looking for an over the top comedy, but it was good for what it was.

I think the quirky made the film work. I don' think it was att all heavy handed or think. Rather it was a piece of fiction about a girl with unusual interest and musical taste. Nor do I see it as being indie for indie's sake. It was writen and directed by people who have that kind of a sensability so of course that is who it turned out. But I think it was an organic thing

If I ever needed to use a movie to describe what an average 3 star film is I'd use Juno. 3 out of 4 stars, or 3 out of 5 stars?
