Pretty much seconds after it happened...since I was in the audience.
I think it was after, when Vince was talking about it on Raw, that it really sunk in what Vince had done, and then reading up on it later on.

EDIT: Actually...I'm wrong.
I didn't find out the actual story until Survivor Series 98, when my friends watching noted that Foley got screwed just like Bret did.
I hadn't seen SS97 because I wasn't watching at the time. I just knew Bret was in WCW.

It was all over the net. Then Vince did the "Bret screwed Bret" thinn the next night on RAW. After that, I believe there was a story about it in PWI. That's when I got the whole story about Bret not wanting to lose in Canada, bla-se-blah.

I forget when i heard about it but i was kind of out of watching wrestling in 1997 so it might have been awhile after the fact.

I actually left the house minutes before it happened, so I had to piece it together from "Bret screwed Bret," and Wrestling with Shadows. The whole situation put the final bullet in kayfabe.

So was the heat in the building NUCLEER HEETZ? Yeah, it was pretty bad. We started the match as jackasses cheering for Shawn, and as soon as that happened, we left pretty much fearing for our lives. Then afterwards, we went to a strip club for my first lapdance. And I learned an important lesson. When they say a lapdance is 5 dollars, it's PER SONG. Not the whole thing. I am lucky to be alive all around, in hindsight.

I kinda figured it out after it happened, but I really got to hear Bret's side in wrestling with Shadows.
On a related note, I agree with Vince in that, after the whole Alundra Blayze/Madusa title in garbage can on live TV thing, he merely wanted to protect his business interests. I wish there could have been an amicable way to resolve this dispute. My theory is, if Vince was so paranoid about it, why not let him keep the title against Shawn and drop it the next night on RAW (as Bret suggested) and have someone basically chapperone him at the hotel and the arena the next day. I mean, it would have made Bret look good in front of the hometown crowd and it would have guaranteed that Vince wasn't screwed if Bret no-showed and dumped the title in the trash on Nitro.
I'm just sayin'.

I've been to better clubs since then in Montreal. But hey, I had a naked woman on my lap for 40 minutes. I wasn't feeling any pain. (Note: I'm a horribly lonesome person. )

As I watched the PPV live, I knew something was amiss. First, Hart was beating the crap out of Shawn for a good long time. Although this was great, I thought: This cannot possibly be according to the script, Shawn's getting pummeled here. There's got to be a reason why Bret is fighting like a man possessed. Now rushing to ringside, THE OWNER of the company, along with a small army of officials and he's obviously irked by what's happening, he's shouting in Bret's face and Bret just shoots him a look of disdain, and continued his mission. And when it was all over he spit right in Vince's face! As HBK did his little dance at the end with the belt in hand, I knew that it was all a setup and a really big story, more than meets the eye. I think Shawn was told beforehand: you're surely gonna catch a mad beating, but hang in there 'cause you're getting the title no matter what. Click on this URL for the entire story: www.fortunecity.com/olympia/nicklaus/232/id55_m.htmThis is what all the fuss was about...

I'm just sayin'. \ i hate to rehash tihs, but bret was under contract through dec.7.. he was scheduled to lose the belt at the ihy ppv in a fatal fourway. how anybody could blame bret after he stayed loyal and refused wcw in 96. only to comeback and feud with austin and eventually have his character destroyed. he also was forced out of the company. so if anything bret should've been allowed to leave the way he wanted. since he was basically forced out after making austin a star. vince told his current world champ to leave the company. just imagine if bret was stan hansen or bruiser brody. and how they would've acted? if bret showed up with the belt, he would've been sued since there was a lawsuit regarding property between wcw/wwf going on. and bret was still under contract. if bret could've took the belt, why didn't he show up the next night with one of the replicas he has? because legally it was impossible. and he was still under contract through dec.7. the screwjob was nothing more than a ploy to sabotage bret's character even more. not a desperation attempt. bret already agreed to job dec.7. why sould bret be the accomdating one? he's the one who after remaining loyal, still being on top of his game and carrying the company(along with austin) that was basically threw out like trash while champ. michaels was refusing to lose to him, but bret's supposed to give in and say shawn i'll lose for you, despite the fact you forfeited a tile and embellisned an injury to avoid losing to me. get the f out of here. the double standard is sad. you vince marks who believe everything he says, are even sadder.

I didn't watch much wrestling at the time. Just a little ECW Hardcore TV if it was on late at night.
And I didn't bother to look for wrestling on the internet until late '98... it was probably mid-late 1999 when I first read about it.

I didn't get on the internet until later, plus I was like 12, so I had no idea what happened until Raw when I saw Vince's "Bret screwed Bret" interview, and it still didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time. I didn't even know Bret, one of my favorite wrestlers ever, and my favorite in the WWF then, was leaving.
