I think Jim Johnston is a big loss for the company. He's provided some of the most memorable and recognizable themes in wrestling history. I'm not saying all the themes he has made are like that, because he has made tons and tons of generic sounding songs for jobbers and mid-carders. But you can't blame him, with guys coming and going in the company, it's hard to make every last one something memorable and catchy. Amoung the top themes he's composed include:
- Ultimate Warrior "Way of the Warrior" - Jake Roberts "Snake Bit" and "Trust Me" - Razor Ramon "Bad Boy" - Shawn Michaels "Sexy Boy" - The Undertaker "Graveyard Symphony" and "Dark Side/Lord of Darkness" - Nation of Domination "Power" - Owen Hart "Rocket" and "Enough is Enough" - Vader "Mastodon" - Dude Love "Dude's Shack" - Steve Austin "Hell Frozen Over/I Won't Do What You Tell Me" - D-Generation X "Break It Down/Are You Ready?" - The Rock "Do You Smell It?/Know Your Role/It's Conquered" - Triple H "My Time" and "The Game" - Mankind "Schizophrenic", "Ode to Freud", and "Wreck" - Mr. McMahon "No Chance" - Goldust "Gold-Lust" - Kurt Angle/The Patriot "Medal" - Kane "Into the Fire/Burned" and "Slow Chemical" - Edge "You Think You Know Me" - Gangrel/The Brood "Blood" - Chris Jericho "Break Down the Walls" - Chris Benoit "Shooter" - Brock Lesnar "Next Big Thing" - Eddie Guerrero/Los Guerreros "We Lie, We Cheat, We Steal" and "I Lie, I Cheat, I Steal" - Muhammad Hassan "Praise Allah" - Mr. Kennedy "Turn Up the Trouble"
Seriously. Most of you know all these songs well. I could go on and on about songs he's composed. He is and forever will have a mark in wrestling history with the themes he's provided for the last two decades.

Hopefully there's a rights agreement reached before Johnston leaves, that way WWE DVDs won't become even more wretched hackjobs than they already are!

LOL to say Johnston hasn't done anything of merit for the past 10-15 years is simply ludicrous. That discounts everything from Volume 2 onwards, not to mention pretty much every single theme of the Attitude era. Also, crediting themes to the likes of Chris Warren and Silkk the Shocker is equally stupid and ignorant. They come in as contracted ARTISTS - IE Johnston hires them to lay down the vocals on the track. Jim himself is the one who writes, composes, plays the instruments, lays down the track mixes, produces and finishes each theme. His music is deep in the WWE from promos, vignettes, entrances, PPVs, song selections..you name it, he does it. His departure from WWE is going to be massive. You think Cody Rhodes theme sucks? That was selected from a generic production library, which WWE will now most likely do much more in Johnston's absence. Welcome to WWE Music 2008 - generic production libraries and nu-metal bands like Shinedown, Papa Roach and Drowning Pool all the way. This will also most likely put the cock-block on Anthology II as well. Great news

This post has been brought to you by the makers of Opinion over Fact. Yes, Opinion over Fact, when you want to show everyone why your word is the only thing that is right. Not at all, because all I've done from the start is state my opinion and defended it when people have challenged it. If people disagree then that is fine, of course we don't all think the same, but please acknowledge that it is my point of view and the fact I have formed it for a reason. This is demonstrated in my previous post. Stryker, STOP STRYKING!

Do people really mute the TV when theme music comes on? Just seems so needless. I mean fair enough not liking a theme tune or not remembering it, but to actively silence your television and any possible crowd reaction just seems crazy to me.

I do, if I don't like the music, the last thing I want is it stuck in my head for the rest of the day, and like I said before, outside of Bob Artese and Lillian, I don't like any ring announcer's tone. The old WCCW guy was good too, just to qualify that.

I'm sorry, but none of them to me are iconic theme music, other than the DX theme and Our Time which are credited to the Chris Warren Band. The Chris Warren band wouldn't be anywhere if Johnston hadn't offered them a job. And The Rock and Austin's themes aren't some of the most recognizable and iconic themes in wrestling history? You know exactly who is coming out when you hear a car crash or the trumpets in Foley's and Angle's music. Johnston has done an incredible job. They're recognizable and iconic because of the wrestlers they are associated with. Replace those themes with any other semi appropriate theme that isn't complete garbage, and it would also be recognizable and iconic if they had been using it for years.

I wonder if the WWE will try to get Jimmy Hart back to do the new entrance themes. He is credited with the music for some of the 80's WWF themes (such as Shawn Michaels) and many of the WCW themes.

Once he's gone, all future wrestlers should just be given Kerwin White's theme.
...and his titantron.

I wonder if the WWE will try to get Jimmy Hart back to do the new entrance themes. He is credited with the music for some of the 80's WWF themes (such as Shawn Michaels) and many of the WCW themes. According to the an old fan club cassette, Hart wrote the Bret Hart/Hart Foundation theme too, but Johnston was credited on Full Metal for the last version of Hart's theme, which is pretty much an updated version of the Hart Foundation theme. No clue who should be given more credit for that theme. Jimmy Hart wrote the themes for Honky Tonk Man, Fabulous Rougeaus, the Mountie's second theme, nWo Wolf pac, Hulk Hogan's WCW theme, and 3 Count. He had a partner/collaborator, but I can't remember his name. Michael Hayes wrote the Freebird theme, but I don't know if he has much experience writing music other than that. I think WWE's best bet is to hire a composer/musical director to replace Johnston.

Jim Johnson didn't just write the music, though he's best known for his classic entrance themes. His role as music supervisor also had him selecting every piece of music used on WWE television. So if you like any music on WWF/E TV since he got the job some 20+ years ago, Jim arrange for it to be played. So whether he composed it, or helped produce Michael Hayes and Jimmy Hart's tunes, or selected "Leave the Memories Alone" by Fuel for the Ric Flair retirement theme, ALL the music is there because of Jim's work.
