Sure people look back at things with rose colored glasses, and tend to forget little things that got repetitive and annoying.
The 90's was an era where they broke all the cliches of wrestling from the 80's but in turn created their own annoying cliches that were finally toned down in 2002 onword era. Sure I could go on about the treatment of women as glorified porn stars and only there to disrobe or give thinly veiled blowjob joke, or the 2 minute matches, low blows becoming so overused that they stopped being funny, but....
My personal peeve was that almost every week (and sometimes every match) the two in the ring would go into brawl outside the ring and into the audience which was cool, but then they took to the backstage. Sure it itwas fun the first time, but damn doing every week I felt sorry for the people who paid to be there and half the show was watching them go at it on a monitor in what was possibley a retaped segment.
The other thing that annoyed me was the ridiculously long first segment where Rock/Austin/HHH/McMahon/Foley or whoever was the flavor of the moment getting a 20 minute opening segment in which they cut a ridiculously long promo, followed by another superstar interrupting and countering wtih another ridiculously long promo.
So my question to you who have watched for at least since 96, is what new and innovative concept that you watched unfold become an annoying cliche that either lingers to this day or you're glad has finally been done away with.

Heel A and Heel B are teaming/aligned together. All of a sudden, Heel B gets fed up and turns on Heel A, aligning himself with Face C. But wait, it's not a real turn after all, Heel B was only pretending, and Heels A and B proceed to put a whupping on Face C.

The Johnathan Coachman rule: a combination of faces and heels (usually 2 or more for each side) starts the show attacking each other of talking trash. GM/Authority Figure comes out and makes a tag-team main-event between them. Usually in 6-man tag form.

World Champion faces Wrestler A at PPV, retains, and then the next show World Champion cuts a promo, cue Wrestler B's music, next Title match at PPV is made.

Triple Threats and 4-ways.
Seriously... Do fans have developed a terrible ADD that make them unable to follow a storyline with two people feuding, then putting the feud on hold just to resume it later on?
Tag team matches with rivals forced to team together.

Constant Championship rematches and Championship matches on "free" TV
99 times out of 100 there's no title change unless there's a suspension coming

But wait, it's not a real turn after all, Heel B was only pretending, and Heels A and B proceed to put a whupping on Face C. Actually that happened in the early 90's also in Memphis with Brian Christopher getting beaten up by Well Dunn and he sides with Jarrett for a show or two then turns on him to join back up with them in beating Jarrett down. And most notably in WCW with Sting and Flair. Flair and Arn feud, Arn gets the better of Flair, Flair seeks help from Savage who turns him down cold and then goes to Sting. Sting after several tries, agrees to team with Flair vs Pillman/Arn, and says that if Flair swerves him in the slightest bit, he'll leave him for dead. Well, apparently that threat couldn't have been that bad because Flair double-crossed Sting anyways to join back up with Arn/Pillman.

Tag team matches with rivals forced to team together. THIS! Main event tag teams in general bore the tears out of me. Every WWE tag match has the same hot-tag formula that it's so boring to watch. I wish they would just abolish tag-team matches for a few months.

The whole phenomenon probably could be called "The Sting Scenario", simply because it's happened to the poor guy so often.

The thing I find the most annoying right now is the overuse of a wrestler's theme music. When it's used for anything other than entering the arena for a match or winning a match, it sucks. When John Cena or whoever wins some sort of war of words on the microphone and then gets his music played, it just feels lame.

Only difference with then and now is at least with the Rock you were assured a good promo. And as for the 2-minute matches, nothing changed there.

WM entrances becoming more elaborate then the PPV itself, you wanna make the entrance special ok, wanna wear something different then you normaly do ok, but when you get to the point when you come out in full Konan gear sitting on the throne, or your comming out to a marching band, perhaps its time to tone it down, look no further then Ric Flairs retirement match, thats how you do a special entrance without going over the top.
