Yo all,
The old '80s Hogan era WWF TV shows were primarily squash matches with (if we were lucky!) a Piper's Pit done live in some arena and taped interviews done, I assume, in the Stanford studios.
My question is were the arena portions of those shows done in one clip and then edited in with the pre-taped stuff to make up the whole hour like Smackdown is today? Or were the arena parts actually clips from the undercard of a bunch of different house shows?
Those squash matches took place in what appeared to be big full arenas and I cannot believe that such huge crowds would come to see nothing but preliminary bums they never heard of get beat up by the stars. It makes more sense that the show we saw was a collage of the undercard of house shows and not that loads of people filled an arena to watch nobodys get slapped around.
The pre-Bichoff era WCW/NWA/GCW (or was that CWG?) shows that were done in the small studio made sense. You cannot fill a huge stadium with squash matches and interviews week after week, but you can fill a small studio and do just that. In fact some of the audience in those old WCW/NWA/GCW shows look like they wandered in from the outside looking for someplace warm.
For those old WWF shows what exactly did they offer to fill up those large venues week after week?
And also on those old WWF where in the venue was Piper's Pit or the Snake Pit, Flower Shop, Barber Shop, Taker's thing, etc. set up? Clearly they were in the arena with the crowd but unlike today they were not in the ring and there was no stage like today. Did the cameras ever clearly show where these things were stationed in the venue?
