So...blackface is OK, but portraying an actor who failed to get an Oscar nod for playing a mentally disabled person (probably, I'm guessing, because he was a comic actor fishing for a nod) is not OK.
Did Tom Hanks arrange this boycott?

Makes me want to see it. There's no such thing as negative publicity.

So, you can play a "special" person in a movie, but you can't make fun of actors who do that. Plus, Robert Downey, Jr., is in blackface; and Tom Cruise plays a Jewish stereotype. Those two don't get boycotted, but this does.

I think at this point people are so desensitized at the notion of blackface and Jew jokes that they consider it acceptible however the idea of someone mentally disabled is still a taboo. It's pretty silly considering how many Oscars have been awarded for actors playing the mentally disabled.

The entire thing is stupid. I've heard of people getting mad at Downey Jr, but don't say crap when 2 black actors play stereotypical white female socialites in "White Chicks." I kinda want to see this movie tho.

Actually, I haven't even heard THAT MUCH about Downey JR's role. All I have heard have been the Mentally Disabled up in arms over SIMPLE JACK.

Everyone should probably stop being dense and making strawmen arguments and realize that the term "retard" doesn't fly with some people. It's a stupid boycott that achieves little and likely misses the point, but there are a lot of offensive words out there that get people riled up. My aunt works with developmentally challenged individuals and I have seen the reaction those individuals get from that word and it's very much a major problem to them. They've made a lot of strides as far as acceptance and hammering out some level of respect in the world and this is something that matters to them. I don't think the movie is really mallicious, but apparently they do.
In short, I don't care, but let's not pretend if they used the "N" word with no African Americans represented in the film that Jesse Jackson and company wouldn't march on Washington and get someone fired.

Good thing IN BRUGES wasn't a bigger hit then....or you'd have had all of the midgets up in arms over it's portrayal of them. Ooop. Sorry. I meant "Dwarves". My bad.

I was going to wait for DVD to see this movie, but f*** it. I will go and after I buy my ticket I will look up in the sky and yell "Up yours Shriver! Go cry to Congress you f***ing babey!"
Trying to figure out the logic, man in blackface=ok. Stereotyping Jewish people=ok. Saying the "R" word=bad.
HAROLD&KUMAR2 had a whole scene that heavily used the other "f" word (the three letter one) and GLADD (or is it GLAAD?) didn't go up in arms. Actually, that word is used a lot in American films as a derogatory word and they don't complain.
Where was Shriver when Timmy debuted on SOUTH PARK? Or the episode wher Cartman joined the Special Olympics (oh I guess that was ok because he got his ass handed t him by them)?

What's really interesting is the fact that Stiller screened the film to the NAACP and numerous african-american journalists, and they reacted favorably to it. So if the NAACP gets the joke I think it's ok. But back to the topic at-hand...interestingly enough it doesn't seem like Shriver came in and bitched about Johnny Knoxville's "The Ringer"

I think the inherent issue here is that the film uses the term "retard" as a throw away joke for a cheap gag to get a quick laugh out of people. In every other film where the make jokes at the expense of the same group or films with actors portraying it, the context apparently matters. Often they disprove the word or are at least there to defend themselves.
Really, its a trivial boycott, but again, I don't doubt there'd be a comparable issue if another group was used in a similar way. But, continue making the same points over and over again. Just because you think it's dumb (and I certainly agree) doesn't mean everyone can't at least take the time to get where they're coming from instead of piecing together their dislike for other people protesting (unless its them doing said protesting) and things they've read other people post.

I was going to wait for DVD to see this movie, but smurf it. I will go and after I buy my ticket I will look up in the sky and yell "Up yours Shriver! Go cry to Congress you smurfing babey!" Trying to figure out the logic, man in blackface=ok. Stereotyping Jewish people=ok. Saying the "R" word=bad. Or the episode wher Cartman joined the Special Olympics (oh I guess that was ok because he got his ass handed t him by them)? This is true, also, what the other poster said about Knoxville's very similar THE RINGER is also true. But again, context must mean something, or otherwise, all of these other films would have been protested or demonstrated against. Another point: Did Shriver bitch about the Black Eyed Peas' song "Let's Get Retarded in Here"?
