It just speaks to a larger issue. The word retard means "to make slow, to delay the process of". Think flame retardant suit. Which leads me to my favorite example. The word niggardly is derived from an old norse word meaning "stingy" and has nothing to do with the term "niger," a latin word that meant "black" and got corrupted to be a racist word. So, instead of words meaning what they, well, mean, they now mean what people perceive them to be Larry Elder said in one of his books that there was a Washington staffer who used the term 'niggardly' in a meeting and someone got offended and eventually the staffer was fired...for saying an entirely unoffensive word which leads me to this question: At what point did we Americans' skin become paper mache? I've been saying for years that political correctness would be the death of this country and it looks like I'm right. That said, saying RDJ is in blackface is rediculous. Blackface was once used in minstral shows and it was degrading to blacks. What RDJ's character is doing is doing what he felt he needed to do to play the part so he didn't put makeup on but he had surgery to alter himself. But this boycott is silly and unneeded. Had this group said nothing the movie would have tanked anyway. Also, the author of that article is a hack at best. Having to resort to profanity proves that they aren't all that intelligent anyhoo.

Reminds me of how the star of Retarded Policeman, a man with Down Syndrome, is quick to point out he's an actor, he gets the joke, and that he is payed for what he does.
It's the people around the mentally disabled that have no sense of humor about these things.
The clip in question isn't even really THAT bad. I've seen a lot worse.

America is just too politically correct. Who cares what people do and say in movies? Isn't this a free country or at least suppose to be? Its not like we are forcing people to go watch these movies that may offend them. Its just stupid.

Well, to be fair, they can boycott it if they'd like.
It might improve sales, overall, but I seriously doubt it would of tanked. RDJr and Jack Black still do well in box office. Ben Stiller isn't enough to write it off.
I might see it. RDJr's "I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!" and portrayal as someone who's taken method acting too far has me mostly sold, but I'll wait until someone I know sees it, to be sure.

America is just too politically correct. Who cares what people do and say in movies? Isn't this a free country or at least suppose to be? Its not like we are forcing people to go watch these movies that may offend them. Its just stupid. There are 300,000,000 people in the U.S. No matter what is thought, done, said someone is going to be offended. Southpark hit the nail on the head in the first Mr. Hanky episode where the school was going to put on a Christmas pageant and the Mrs. Broflovski complains that it wasn't fair to non-Christians so the school goes nuts trying to tweak it so it isn't offensive. The last offensive thing to be removed, IIRC, was the red and green lights because exactly 1 person found them offensive. This is the society we are creating. Ya know, when I was growing up, if someone was making fun of me or calling me names, my mother used to tell me to ignore them or we did that little "sticks and stones" rhyme and more often than not, it worked. Now, if someone is even remotely offended, out come the lawyers. As a good friend of mine keeps saying the wussification of America is marching along.

I've heard nothing major, just a couple of guys talking crap about it and bitching about RDJ playing a black dude. What's really interesting is the fact that Stiller screened the film to the NAACP and numerous african-american journalists, and they reacted favorably to it. So if the NAACP gets the joke I think it's ok. But back to the topic at-hand...interestingly enough it doesn't seem like Shriver came in and bitched about Johnny Knoxville's "The Ringer" Actually, the movie got a kinda positive write-up in a magazine for parents of mentally disabled children. The movie applauded the fact that Knoxville's character was discovered by the other competitors early on in the film and became friends with them. Also, they loved that most of the cast was played by mentally disabled people. They talked about how the director seeked actual Special Olympics competitors and other families through various non-profit foundations and how it was essentially just a really good time for all the actors and families involved. I wish I could find the article. As for the whole Tropic Thunder thing, I think it's stupid because anybody can put out a press release and have people go crazy for it. Personally the movie looks great.

By the way - has anyone mentioned Extras yet?
That being the TV show by Ricky Gervais, from three years ago, in which he and Kate Winslet - playing herself - discuss how she's only doing a WWII film to get an Oscar, and they then see someone with cerebral palsy and she says 'that's another sure-fire Oscar, right there. You're guaranteed an Oscar if you play a mental.'
Yes. 'A mental.'
Did Ricky Gervais get boycotted? Honestly, I may have missed it because I was a latecomer to that show but it wasn't exactly low-profile.

My 4 year old brother made a sign for his Sam I Am costume, and the back of the sign says "I AM SAM". He doesn't understand why that's hilarious.

I would agree that it's a society all of us are creating, definetely. Words are words, it's context and intent that's important, but we're stuck in an age where people try to ban video games everytime a teenager goes on a rampage, sue anybody who uses a word that was even remotely a racial epithet at one point, and also go all bats*** crazy anytime someone says "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas", among other things. Something really needs to be done about it, but I think it starts with people in general getting their heads out of their asses.

I don't see why anyone should be offended by it......White Chicks was the same exact thing but was made by black guys and that movie seemed to not get as much fla--oh wait, they are black-of course it's all right! the only time it is racist to portray a person of another race is if your a white guy-because as we all know there is no such thing as a racist black i.e. minority! Only white people are racist! every other race is perfect 100% !!!!!!!!! At least that is what they are saying when they whine like little morons over something like this....... Did you miss the part where no one was boycotting this because of the black face and, instead, being upset over the whole part with the mentally handicapped people? Then the boycotters are still stupid.......The Ringer did the same only about twenty million times worse and got less flack for it. It's just a case of some whiny a-hole who needs to be slapped around for trying to cause trouble............

I think people have right to boycott it, but they're likely not people who would of normally watched it anyway. I fail to see what this will achieve, but who knows, maybe it will achieve awareness. More likely it'll just lead to people saying "retard" just to mock it.
