When CD's die, it's not going to be because Vinyl, Cassette or 8-Track make a come back, it's going to be because people don't buy music in the traditional sense anymore.

I still buy them from time to time ... when I'm sure that the artist has done a good job on the whole album. Otherwise it's download city.

Soon there will be DVD's with every song an artist has ever made.

I have a feeling that until it becomes factory standard to have a usb port and/or aux port on all autos, cd's will be around.

Soon there will be DVD's with every song an artist has ever made. Possible, but not likely. They'd be tearing into their own profit margins that way. (the record companies)

To me, looking through someone's CD/Vinyl/Tape collection is much more fun than simply browsing someone's ipod.
I hope CD's stick around for a long time.

(the record companies) I know there has been a few artists who have already done this (some of the older school ones where they're long gone, and their music is slowly but surely disappearing).

I say that in less than twenty years everybody will get their movies and music from the internet. Nobody will buy cds or dvds in stores.
Makes me wonder if there will be such a thing as albums anymore. Just 3-4 songs released around a year or two

I still collect Vinyl, so this means nothing to me.

Cds will make a come back if Internet broadband companies start putting a cap on how much data you can download in it's plans. You laugh but it's already started in places like Canada.

I like cds, means I have something tangible for my music. also far more reliable than a computer hard drive.

I should start doing that, but as it stands, I still buy CDs cuz it's easier in my eyes then typing and searching for hours on end. (Easier maybe, but not really cost effective)

Vinyl is already back. According to "Uncle John's bathroom reader" they sold 10 MILLION records in 2006.

If they do away with albums and CDs and people just download music on to there P.C. the music industry would go down the toilet and never come back. How would or could the record companies make enough money to survive let alone sign the next big band or signer or music tastes. If people are just going to download music for free or of the net all the time. We need albums for music and album and music shops sales to survive.
Also0 music shops would go out of business. Which would lead to loads of unemployment again as well.It would not just be the music industry which suffered. Music makes billions of pounds per year. Take this away of the format it is on just now and the country woul.d end up suffering. It could be much worse than you would think.

Take this away of the format it is on just now and the country woul.d end up suffering. It could be much worse than you would think. You could, conceivably, take the record companies out of the loop, as the internet gives bands a distribution channel never before seen. Instead of relying on huge companies to distribute the music through channels they have based on their size, they can go straight to the consumers and market directly to them. The catch is you need to increase the legal downloads that cost money and minimize the illegal ones. Easier said than done, but iTunes has legitamized the business and others are slowly adding to it. As for record companies going out of business, at least in the US, they've long since disappeared. Big box stores carry CDs, but have a ton of other items to offset it. There will be some job loss if this extreme case does happen (I still believe a lot of people want a physical copy of the music they own), but not that significant. Besides, these aren't high skilled jobs we're talking about losing. Regardless, even if CDs are still around, there will likely be a few Indie stores and the Big Box chains like Best Buy and even Wal-Mart.

Yeah, I wonder how many people are gonna run back to CD's if their hard drive crashes and they lose all the music they've paid for when they realize they have to buy them all over again because they forgot to make copies.
