Which video game do you think is more difficult. The original Mega Man or Super Mario Bros. 2?
Super Mario Bros. 2 has a reputation of being the most difficult NES game because it wasn't released in the states.
Mega Man is a very difficult game. The Yellow Devil boss is one of the most toughtest characters ever, the Mega Man Clone is not that easy, as the gaunlet of having to defeat Bomb Man, Fire Man, Ice Man, and Guts Man all in a row without losing a life without any power ups.
Mario 2 has challenge level designs, but the enemies themselfs are basicly the same, the boss is always a Bowser clone or Bowser himself. And use the same attack, his him with fire balls, or use the ax.
Though Mega Man has unlimited continues, while Super Mario Bros. 2 has a limited number of continues.

I came into this thread thinking you meant the US SMB2.
But now that I know the facts, it's no question. SMB2.

Yeah I was about to say Mega Man since I've beaten the us Super Mario Bros 2 (The Dallas ending still pisses me off)
Knowing now what you mean... I'm still going to say Mega Man. Since to get though some of the parts you had to be a platforming god.

Mega Man since I have never beaten it. It's funny I can beat Mega Man 3, 6 and Mega Man X and I finally beat Mega Man 2 this year (don't laugh).
I have beaten the true Super Mario Bros 2 when it was released on the Super NES as the Lost Levels. I only have beaten it once and I probably couldn't do it now my game playing skills range from average to medicore these days.

To this thread, I was confused because I thought SMB2 was considered one of the easiest Mario games. But since you meant the "real" SMB2, I don't have an answer. I never really tried to beat it. I played it occasionally in All-Stars, but never gave it a real go.

One thing that makes it hard for me to beat the real Super Mario Brothers 2 is that I can only play it on the Wii virtual console, I am more confertable using the NES game controller, so I am at a disadvantage.
You can still play it on the SNES as the Lost Levels on Super Mario All Stars, but in my book, that doesn't count. The real SMB2 is only the original 1986 8 bit version, for many reasons at the ver least the SNES version is easier.
I can still play Mega Man on the NES.
For those that hated the US SMB2 ending, the real US SMB2 game Doki Doki Panic is much better. To bad that game was never released here or Wii.
For those that have trouble on Mega Man 2, let me ask you, it is Wily Castle's that gives you problems? Or is Quick Man stage with those lazer beans? Except for the lazer in the Quick Man stage, the 8 robot master levels are very easy, especially when compared to the original Mega Man robot master levels. But Wily's Castle in MM2 is very hard, especially the bosses in part 2 and 4. The boss in part 4 is such a pain to beat. I have nightmares thinking about that.

SMB2 can kiss my black ***. Game is near impossible. It's like Nintendo EAD purposely said,"Lets see how many people we can frustrate while making tons of money."

I can easily say without a shadow of a doubt, SMB2. Some of the levels in that game were just damn rude. I mean a good chunk of the game. The last time I bet SMB2 (Or the Lost Levels) Was about 13 to 14 years ago. I mean, what kind of level has you jump on a green spring while simulating your landsite DURING an instant hail storm?

I guess I'll say SMB2, only because I beat the "Lost Levels" version of it on Super Mario All Stars. And yes, I know that version's easier, namely because you can save after every level. But I did make it through the 8th world, then onto some levels that had wierd symbols instead of numbers to represent them (though this is hazy because I beat it when Super Mario All Stars first came out).
And besides, I tried playing Mega Man 1 a few times on the original NES as a kid, on an emulator, and on the anniversary collection for PS2, and I don't think I beat one single level of it!
BTW, when I first read this I thought you were talking about the US SMB2, which was not a very hard game at all.

I was going to put a disclaimer that I was talking about the real version of Super Mario 2 on the thread title, but I didn't have anymore room.

If its US Super Mario 2 vs. Mega Man... gotta go with Mega Man. But since we are talking about the Japanese Super Mario 2, SMB2J is the most difficult, hands down. I recently got it on Wii VC, and I remember playing it back in the day on Super Mario All Stars, and that is one hard smurfing game. Just thinking about it makes me want to throw a controller lol

My problem with Mega Man 2 is beating Wily. I can never reach him with enough E Tanks to even get to the alien form.
Maybe I never had the patience to learn the pattern enough to beat him, but I still can't do it.

Lost Levels was pretty damn hard, especially those levels with the wind picking up and you only had like one block to stand on. But I did beat it though.
As for that, MM1 was very hard, especially that they didn't create the Sub-Tanks yet, so you had to make sure you didn't get hit (which was a task in itself) when fighting the 8 bosses at the end.

SMB2 claimed 3 controllers.
All other games combined, only 1.
That game owned my ass every day, every way.

But what is all this talk about an international version of SMB2? Did I miss something? I always thought the US version was the only one.

I beat the lost levels about 15 years ago when it was out in All Stars. I haven't played it since, on the grounds that SM3&4 are much better variations on the theme of Jumping on enemies. I belive the same logic applies to Mega Man, the latter games perfect the concepts introduced in the earlier ones.
8-Bit games didn't have much to work with in terms of memory, or graphics, and they still had a lot of tricks to learn to make games fun. So Impossible to Beat worked just as well.
