THE DARK KNIGHT was finally jettisoned from the top 10 this week, finishing in 13th place in its 11th week of release. The film is still very far from the box-office record-holder that is TITANIC ($600M), but with $525M in its coffers already, it might still hold an "outside shot" of surpassing it when the film is re-released in January 2009.
It would be cool if it breaks Titanics record but it probably won't. but I am willing to bet that the DVD sells will beat Titanic

I don't think Titanic has any records for DVD sales, but I could be mistaken.

I still don't say it's Titanic's record. The record belongs to Gone With The Wind. And no one is going to come close to breaking that record.

Also, its a little less than $30M away from being the 4th movie ever to break a Billion dollars worldwide. It needs to double its current earnings to beat out Titanic in worldwide numbers though. Its insane how much money Titanic made.

Not nearly as much as a lot of blockbusters have had since its release, anway.

I still love this little tid-bit. I got this off of Movieblog.com. Its the top movies of all time based on ticket sales, not money.
#1 Gone With The Wind 202,044,600 $1,430,476,000 #2 Star Wars 178,119,600 $1,261,086,700 #3 The Sound Of Music 142,415,400 $1,008,300,900 #4 E.T. 141,854,300 $1,004,328,700 #5 The Ten Commandments 131,000,000 $927,480,000 #6 Titanic 128,345,900 $908,688,900 #7 Jaws 128,078,800 $906,798,000 #8 Doctor Zhivago 124,135,500 $878,879,000 #9 The Exorcist 110,568,700 $782,826,200 #10 Snow White 109,000,000 $771,720,000 #11 101 Dalmatians 99,917,300 $707,414,100 #12 Empire Strikes Back 98,180,600 $695,118,900 #13 Ben-Hur 98,000,000 $693,840,000 #14 Return Of The Jedi 94,059,400 $665,940,600 #15 The Sting 89,142,900 $631,131,400 #16 Raider Of The Lost Ark 88,141,900 $624,044,300 #17 Jurassic Park 86,205,800 $610,337,400 #18 The Graduate 85,571,400 $605,845,500 #19 The Phantom Menace 84,825,800 $600,566,700 #20 Fantasia 83,043,500 $587,947,800
Batman was number 35 at the time (this was from late August). Thats what I hate about all this money talk. With tickets $8 and over nowadays, movies are gonna make more money. Ticket sales is where its really at IMo (granted not to the studio, but thats neither here nor there)

If you adjust it for inflation Gone With The Wind technically is the top. If you don't than Titantic easily has it. Though you do have to remember that Gone With The Wind had kind of an unfair advantage if you compare it to Titanic. Back in 1939 TV was no where near being popular and this was also the year that The Great Depression started to die down making it possible for more people to go to the movies.
Technically I would say Titanic deserves it's spot because nothing else until now has really come close in over ten years. I would say Dark Knight was a good movie but it also had a big advantage that Titanic didn't have and that is the Internet. Sure internet was around back then but I bet half the people on this board didn't even have it yet.

Yeah, for all this talk of how tickets cost more now, no one seems to factor in that there was a lot less attention competition for "Gone with the Wind" than for "Titanic" or "Dark Knight." No tv, no internet, and there weren't nearly as many movies being produced at the time as there are now. Basically the only competition was radio, which while the old radio serials are fun in their own way, movies have always been more of a social event (you go out to the movies, rather than stay in and listen to the radio). Also, moving pictures kick the ass out of just sound any day (in my opinion).

Well, you also gotta take into account that The Dark Knight is getting rereleased in January/February to make more money.

Doesn't Warner Bros. plan to re-release the film in theaters in December/January during the Oscar buzz season?
If they do, there's a slight chance if could beat Titanic, but it's doubtful.

That's factored into their box office take. exactly. so you can't say Dark Knight won't topple Titanic. It still has a chance with the rerelease.

I still don't say it's Titanic's record. The record belongs to Gone With The Wind. And no one is going to come close to breaking that record. That's not really fair... There were VCRs, the only way to see a movie was to actually go to the theater and see it, the movies were more popular in general at that time, there was virtually no competition. The drop of the dollar's value makes a movie competing with any adjusted price unfair.

Looking back, it was not a very good movie, probably, but I had the hots for the middle sister, and I thought the robot was BADASS. I even had a remote controlled one. "CRUSH, KILL, DESTROY!"

For the record, the best selling DVD of all time is Finding Nemo. It's sold about 40 million copies. Can The Dark Knight beat that? I doubt it.
