With the recent catastrophic earthquakes in China I was wondering, do you think California will ever suffer a massive earthquake? I mean a real huge cataclysms that causes unimaginable damage?
I mean, nature sure seem to have been on a massive rampage in recent years with quakes, tsunamis and hurricanes.
Lets hope it never happens and I don't really know much about how huge quakes can get in California but, thoughts?

Anything along this line has the potential for a major ground based geological natural disaster, be it an earthquake or volcano. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ring_of_FireCalifornia is on the San Andreas fault so the likelyhood of a major earthquake is in fact very likely at some point. When is a completely different question ... it could be next week, next year or not for another 70 years or more.

Very likely to happen in the next hundred years or so. We are over due at it seems right now.

I saw, I think on the Discovery Channel, that the next major earthquake to hit Seattle will completely level it.

Better start buying all that cheap California desert land for future beach front property.

Yeah, it'll happen. And nature really isnt on much of a rampage. We're all doomed one way or another.

I saw, I think on the Discovery Channel, that the next major earthquake to hit Seattle will completely level it. Seattle is in much more danger of being buried by Mt. Rainier. This threat is very real. The volcano has not erupted since 1894, so I would say that it is due.

Know what ELSE is due to erupt?
Something that COULD equal the force of 100 Hiroshima bombs.
The Yellowstone SUPER-Volcano.
goodbye, cruel species. RIP, life as we know it. When this f***er blows (Not IF, but WHEN) it will be a catastrophe on par with, if not many times greater than Pompeii or Vesuvius.

Yup, it'll happen eventually and basically have the same effect as if Earth were hit by a mega-asteroid.

That doesn't sound like a good time at all.

Actually, it IS imminent, in the sense that it COULD blow in the next twenty minutes, it has that much pressure built up.
Imminent enough that it has the USGS worried enough to install all sorts of seismographs and sensors, and watch the thing AROUND THE CLOCK.
That's imminent enough for me. Your mileage may vary....but I'm not panic-ing about it. Merely keeping abreast of it's activities.

Because frankly, if it goes off we're f***ed and oh well. I have other things to worry about or keep track of besides things that may or may not kill me. Maybe after I graduate And I'm not trying to be a jerk here I'm just...a bit...tired I guess of hearing about all these things that will doom us all and make everything I worked for be a moot point. Not the intent of everyone but that's how it feels in general. Apologies

Not the intent of everyone but that's how it feels in general. Apologies The only thing I could say to argue your point would be that them SAYING "Don't Worry....it's not going to go off" is EXACTLY what I would expect those in charge to say. After all, they AREN'T ever going to go with the TRUTH, and risk a massive, needless PANIC, right? I mean, even HINTING that this thing is building TOWARDS an explosion in the near future would he hysteria inducing. So the official line is, "There's nothing to worry about. Go about your lives." And I agree with your second assessment. We'd be f***ing TOAST so fast, that it really IS futile obsessing over it. When it goes, that's it, man. Game over. So really, worrying about the "here and now" IS more intelligent, and more worthy of our time/effort. A well thought out response, Mr. Diamond, and I applaud you.

My counterpoint to that would be the scientists telling us that the LHC wouldn't kill us or replicate the big bang or create black holes that could cause a problem were just saying that under this logic. Given what's happened recently (past couple of years) of the scientific community due to falsified research, i'd say they're not apt to lie even if it would avoid a "panic" After all, huge volcanic incidents not involving supervolcanoes but still dangerous nonetheless get fair warning. I'd say if it were an imminent threat there'd be some sort of government program working on developing underground survival vaults...and as much as i love a good conspiracy that's not something you can fairly easy keep under wraps these days
