I never cared for this strip. Occasionally they'll be funny, but its hardly consistent. Do enjoy the art

Ten years?! That's gotta be one of the oldest webcomics around, and most probably THE oldest one to still be running. I love going back to the first few comics and see how they were announcing the release of Final Fantasy 8, and pondered which would be better between the Game Cube and the PS2. ;D
My only problem with Penny Arcade is that it has a tendency to be very fanboyish at times, which can be irritating and ruin the fun. That, and the fact that Jerry Holkins said that Ctrl+Alt+Del's miscarriage storyline was " the first horseman of the Apocalypse." Really? A cartoonist on the Internet trying to add some depth to his characters by talking about a serious topic is the worst problem of the World right now?

My problem is, the creators of Penny-Arcade come off as assholes. In fact they do so many asshole-ish things that they pretty much use PAX and Child's Play as their "get out of jail" cards. As much as I respect them for Child's Play, it does not, and I repeat, does not make them safe from all the asshole-ish things they do. Not only that, but they like to think very highly of themselves. They'd go and say a webcomic's recent arc or strip wasn't funny(when in truth it was REALLY funny) and then go and make an arc like that stupid as hell "Paint the Line" arc, and they themselves would laugh at how "funny" it was, when it was void of any real humor. And as for how they view Tim Buckley's move to do the miscarriage storyline in CAD, well, truth is, storyline wise, CAD has been the best of the normally funny strips. Despite all of his characters looking the same(and I swear, if he didn't draw the outline of Lilah's boobs I'd think she was a man), they actually have depth now. More depth than I can say of Tycho and Gabe. So Tycho is an alcoholic bestiality loving guy possessed with a demonic entity and had a crappy childhood and is estranged from his family and Gabe is....stupid...and loves Hello Kitty and Pokemon and has an overactive imagination. Really deep characters.... It's good for a few laughs, but now it is just there to be there. I still like the archived strips, though.

That belongs to Kevin and Kell, which has been around since 1995. Then again, that webcomic doesn't even have a shred of the presence that Penny Arcade does.

Specifically, ostrich and giraffe pictures. He has a serious thing about slender necks. I don't know the comic itself, but there was one where he thinks his wife found his collection of giraffe pictures/videos, and he claims that it's "Legal...in the countries it was filmed!" EDIT: Yeah! Like Koda beat me to. *grumble*

I think the fact that it has been around for so long has allowed PA to be so successful. I mean now these guys just have to make 9 panels a week, and roughly 4 weeks a month, so they only have to make 12 strips a month and get to sit back and play video games and enjoy themselves. It doesn't even take them that long to do. Of course, part of that is they make a LOT of money off of their advertisers and merchandise.

Sorry for my ignorance. What are PAX and Child's Play? PAX is their annual gaming convention while Child's Play is their charity that gives video games to sick kids. Yeah. PAX stands for Penny-Arcade Expo, and in its first year it was...eh pretty cool, kind of small though, but since then it has become THE gaming trade show to attend in the US ever since E3 became small and closed to the public. PAX is big and open to the public. They also have an "Iron Man of Gaming" tournament each year where the winner wins a few thousand dollars plus a lot of prizes. Child's Play, as Ani stated, is their charity that gives not only video games, but board games as well to sick kids/kids stuck in hospitals. While Penny-Arcade goes around collecting a lot of the money themselves for Child's Play, one thing that is becoming popular is gamers holding marathons that they air live on the internet where people watching can donate money to a paypal account that the gamers make after which they send all the money raised to the Child's Play paypal account. Some of the famous examples of this are the Halo and Zelda marathons, and most recently the Super Mario marathon where three former college roommates played and beat Super Mario Bros, SMB2, SMB3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy in just 3 days. We even made a thread about it here, and several posters, myself included, began planning our own marathons for Child's Play, with such marathons being Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and Metroid.

I like the comics, but Tycho's overdrawn rants about things I hardly care about are very Warrior-esque, with lots of big words that I'm sure even he doesnt know what they mean.

CAD is nothing more than one note gags (The main character really, REALLY loves videogames) and the miscarriage storyline was thrown in as nothing more than a cheap tactic to get people interested. Problem is there's no real substance to his comic, his art is constantly recycled, and the dude is a complete douche (Seriously just look it all up). I'm not saying the PA dudes are saints but they're very upfront with their feelings on everything. They know that they're dicks and don't hide behind the "John Gabriel's Greater Internet F***wad Theory". I think a lot of their douchiness is a mixture of real feelings and a bit of acting out as their character (Specifically "Tycho"). What I really respect, to this day, is their insistence on "fans first". The biggest example of this is their site advertising. Normally, most places give advertising to the highest bidder but the PA guys stand behind the games/etc. that advertise on their site. They demand to try out anything advertised on their site and will only advertise stuff that they specifically endorse. I can't remember what game it was but they advertised it based off of a video shown by the developers. When the game came out horribly broken, the ads were pulled from the site and Tycho apologized for misleading readers. The guys seem to always be looking out for the gaming community as a whole be it from an extremely charitable side (Child's Play) or giving us gamers the first true "-Con" where it really feels like gamers can come together and ENJOY each other's company, rather than calling each other random curse words over XBL. While comic itself has lost a bit of luster over the years, Gabe's art has just been getting better and better every year. The guy still amazes me by the amount of character he can get out of the simplest of people (I love his expression in THIS ONE, NSFW!).
