Yeah I like history too, did a minor in it while getting my bachelors. I like the non-traditonal history books like "Lies my teachers told me" and "Don't know much about History", things that kinda blow up all the nice little history lessons you get in elementary and middle (and sometimes high school). You should get "One night Stands with American History" www.amazon.com/One-Night-American-History-Revised-Updated/dp/0060538201/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229547660&sr=8-1You'll great stories about: -The time a British solider almost shot George Washington dead but decided against it at the last minute. -Mark Twain's speech on spanking it! -The story of how Santa Claus' modern image came to be (hint: it's not Coca-Cola) -and much more I see it has a revised edition. Must pick that up (have an older one.) If you liked that you should pick up Richard Shenkman's Lies, Legands and Cherished Myths of American History& L,L&CM of European History. They're both full of information and the European one in particular is very funny

I love learning about history. I just recently finished a 500+ page book on the history of gambling.
It's amazing all that mankind has accomplished in the past couple hundred years. All the highs, all the lows, and what if's...

History Major from William and Mary.
I used to watch History Channel all the time, then it began to be Nostradamus and doomsday Prophecy 24/7 and I stopped.

I'm very much into history. I also pursue knowledge about dogs, weapons, and serial killers.
I have a very odd range of interests.

Love history, in an odd way. I love reading the incident and occurrences, but I can't retain dates for s***, and I have a hard time putting some things in order chronologically in relation to one another.

I studied modern history and my friend who studied medieval and ancient history says to me that modern history isn't proper history! Meh, what does he know!

Most definitely - my degree beginning in September '09 is Classical History w/ Archaeology.
Recently, I gained the highest grade in my college class for a presentation I did on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Yeah, I know I'm blowing my trumpet. ;D
EDIT: And I agree with the person who mentioned how some the History-focused TV channels have become really poor - all doomsday, paranormal and UFO crap.
I find listening to lectures and some of the stuff of Youtube (Bettany Hughes... my god!) much better.

He has shows about history and how things connect and it's amazing stuff. I'm not sure he's on YouTube or not, but if you love history check his show out. It's really well done. I love military history as well.

Is that all the History channel does these days?
I stopped watching when it became the Hitler channel.
Now History International was great when it first came on, I'm huge on the first world war and they acctuly covered it and the Korean war. Which are two wars not talked about much even though they are loaded with interest.
Now History International has become History channel 2.0 which is not a good thing.

Yep I am. Always loved History and did it for A Level. I did English for my BA which a lot of it was History related and went back to it to do an MA in History. Specialised in the Holocaust so I know a ton about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Plus also a huge buff for US History. Another history buff here. I got my BA in the subject, mainly into the social history aspect of the discipline than say something like military history. I hate when people say things "it's just a bunch of dates" or think of it as just dryly reading off a time line (i.e. "this happened followed by that" not knowing there's context you have to know) or when people say "how do you know it was like that, maybe they're just lying about that stuff. blah blah blah , I'm an idiot who doesn't know that part of history is trying to sort through the B.S." But yea there does tend to be a lot of overlap between the arts and humanities. For example I had some history professors who had us read novels in which the story was either based in the same time frame or covers the same themes discussed in lectures and in academic textbooks.

History's been my favorite subject since the 5th grade, when I was the only kid in my class to get 100% on my states/capitals test, and when I got to learn about US history, THEN go to Boston that summer to see the stuff I had just studied. Now I'm a history/politics fanatic. I'm a Massachusetts native/lifelong resident and got my BA in history from a small liberal arts college in Mass and I took an entire class on the American Revolution and when you're from a state that used to one of the thirteen British colonies it does make the information seem that more pertinent. Especially since most of the first salvoes were fired in Mass.

I like Bettany Hughes as well.... But I'll be sure to check James Burke out though.

He's got a few shows out called 'Connections' (and a few others as well) - he also has books out as well. Can anyone recommend any good history books? I'd love to read some...any topic, I don't care.

My major was in history. Still read it all the time for fun. (I was the only one on my bus this morning reading that new book on the Teapot Dome Scandal. ;D ) "Don't know much about history..."
