Can someone please explain to me how the Giants already the clinched the division? If they lose out and Dallas wins out then they have the same record. The Giants are 4-2 in the division while Dallas is 3-2 with one division game to go. Then the Giants are 8-2 in the conference with two to play and Dallas is 7-4 with one conference game to play. So if the Giants lose out and Dallas beats Philly in week 17, we have a tie. So can anyone explain this to me please? You know...that is a good point. Hell, the Giants haven't secured shit really. I mean take this for example, if they lose out they won't even have a first round bye. If they lose out and the Vikings win out, it'll be the Vikings and Panthers with the first round byes. Basically, in my minds, no team, unless they are far and ahead of everyone else in their division, should clinch anything until the last week of the regular season.

Basically, in my minds, no team, unless they are far and ahead of everyone else in their division, should clinch anything until the last week of the regular season. From ESPN.com: 1 - Split 2 - 4-2 to 3-2 (Dal/Phi wk 17) 3 - 10-2 to 6-4 +2 So the Giants' 10-2 record against common opponents (WAS, PHI, AFC North, NFC West) cannot be matched by the Cowboys, who at best could finish 8-4. As far as divisional tie-breakers go, I think it works. 12 of 16 games are common, plus 2 head-to-head. So only 2 games per season are random (not exactly, but) chance. The Cowboys got Tampa Bay and Green Bay; the Giants got Carolina and Minnesota. Fair enough. Romo got hurt, so did Orton, so did Frerotte, so did Garcia. You never can tell what a backup QB is going to do, and how the injury will affect long-term.

That's at the end of the year. I want to know why they clinched already. There's no way Dallas can match NY when it comes to record against common opponents (Tiebreaker #3). At best, Dallas can go 8-4 against common opponents, while NY can finish, at worst, 10-2. Basically, in my minds, no team, unless they are far and ahead of everyone else in their division, should clinch anything until the last week of the regular season. I don't understand this. There's no way Dallas can move ahead of NY based on tiebreakers. Therefore, there's no way NY can lose the division. Hence, they've clinched it.

What Insomniac said. They clinch, because they clinched. The NFL doesn't just randomly say "Oh, these here guys are the winners." You clinch when your oppenents mathematicly can't possibly catch up to you, rather it's because of overall record or tiebreaker rules. T.O. blaming Ed Werder. Not exactly the kind of answer that will end this situation. I'd trust Werder more than T.O., to be perfectly honest. Rich Eisen on NFL GameDay Final said it best. Werder isn't going to lie about it. He's not just going to make Shazbot up. Now, the people giving him the info might, but I truly doubt he has contacts that are that untrustworthy. Also, Carolina Panthers bringing the pain! I just hope OL Vincent and DL Keamo are healthy enough by the Giants game. We'll need them.

And so ends the Eagles' season, barring the intervention of God Himself. Of course, since there's only like 3 Eagles fans on the board (me included), most of the people here will be happy about that. Hey now, don't lose out yet. Yes, we need Tavaris Jackson and Childress to not choke next week, but if the Vikings win, I believe they clinch, and I know they would love to not go into the last week of the season fighting for a playoff spot. Also, Tampa's run defense has gone MIA somewhere, so who knows, they may lose at least one more, which is all we need as well. But also remember, we have to take care of shit (awesome filter BTW) ourselves. If we lose then that's it, and even that's not a guarantee. And great call by NBC on the flex. Next week's game is absolutely huge. Hopefully Philly doesn't blow it tomorrow and they flex that game as well. I seriously don't want to be stuck watching the Colts v. Titans second teamers when my team is fighting for a playoff berth.

Still point remains, that is the only thing the Giants clinched, if they lose out they won't even have a first round bye(if the Vikings win out as well).

No one said they clinched a first round bye. They just said they clinched the division title and a playoff spot. But, a first round bye and the number one seed in the NFC will go to the Panthers or the Giants. No other teams can get it.
What are the records of the NFC North and NFC West division leaders?

Arizona is 8-6, but they'd be out anyway since NY beat them. Minnesota is 9-5, and they play each other the last week. So if the Vikings win out and NY loses out, the Vikings get a first round bye.

An Eagles blog broke down the possible flex games for the last week of the season. Unlike the rest of the flex, they can wait until next week to move the game to maximize the best matchup.
Depending on situations, we could see: Dallas/Philly - The last NFC Wild Card Spot on the line(Assuming Tampa and Atlanta don't win out and/or Philly doesn't lose) New York Jets/Miami - AFC East Title on the line(Assuming that somehow someone doesn't clinch by then) New York Giants/Minnesota - Potential No. 2 in NFC (If NY loses and Minnesota wins next week) Denver/San Diego - AFC West title (Assuming every other situation goes to hell)
Personally, I think that they would go for Philly/Dallas because it drew huge ratings earlier and it has just as big implications. But the only problem is that it could easily mean nothing. Chances are the Jets/Dolphins game will mean the most that last week.

Firsthand, I'd like to congratulate the Carolina Panthers on winning homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, for if the Giants come into the Meadowlands and play like they did last night, I can guarantee you the Panthers will win by 20+ points.
Secondly, I'd like to know who was the perpetrator behind replacing the Giants offensive line with a slew of cardboard likenesses of Shaun O'Hara, Rich Seubert, David Diehl, Chris Snee and especially Kareem McKenzie. At no point should the 'best offensive line in football' (Which I never believed in the first place) give up eight sacks, and three to a Lawrence Taylor wannabe. Disgusting.
It appears that the source of the Giants undoing this year may be the lack of an adjustment. Last season when Ward, Jacobs and half of the defense went down due to injury, both offensive and defensive coaches made adjustments so the team could go on a win the Super Bowl. This time, I see stubbornness in Hufnagel/Coughlin to change a game plan that is sagging horrendously without the offense's two horses, Plaxico Burress & Brandon Jacobs. At this rate, even the Lions could give the Giants a scare... I mean, hell, the Bengals already did.
Who knows, maybe when the Giants stop playing 'desperate teams,' the Giants will start playing like they can... which won't be happening since every team into the playoffs are desperate for a win.

S-Chrome, The Giants rested their best running back so that he could play the Panthers next week. I think this might have been a throwaway game to them....dont ask me why.
And EMB.....Dallas vs. Philly is easily the best matchup of the four you mentioned.....

Definitely Philly/Dallas is the best potential matchup (Heated rivalry, huge egos, everything at stake), but if Atlanta wins next week, then the league would have to gamble on St. Louis beating Atlanta for that game to mean something.
Assuming that Atlanta loses though, Philly/Dallas will almost definitely be the Sunday Night game.

The Giants had a shot to kill or at least, seriously compromise the Cowboys' playoff hopes. Now, why would a team that both Giant players and Giant fans hate the most consider this game a 'throwaway game?' If nothing, they certainly played like it was a throwaway game.
