As we all know, even the WWE isn't special and can't avoid the current credit crunch.
We've seen many wrestlers released this year, pyro cut down, referee schedules reduced, Smackdown filming schedule reduced and upto 50 superstars released.
My question is this, as the rosters get smaller (ECW anyone?), one has to wonder what will give.
The top tier is secure on the major brands. The mid card is given a slight chance, but if they don't get over in small amounts of time they're jobbed and released.
So my question is this, are the days of a deep meaningless roster over? Will we end up with no-name jobbers instead of named jobbers, ala Funaki.

What happened to those guys? Lost tag titles, decided to go find Edge in Hell. Haven't gotten the memo that Edge has returned from Hell yet.

Does anybody know how much of WWE's revenue is generated by PPVs? With the economic conditions getting worse and it becoming increasingly easy to watch them via less legal means it's likely their buy-rates will drop of significantly until the economic situation improves.
They aren't exactly in danger of going out of business as they have plenty of revenue streams, live attendance and DVD sales are even likely to increase, however if their revenue does drop significantly then more wrestlers are likely to be wished well in their future endevours.
I suspect it's people who are rarely on TV and the people on inflated salaries for their position/worth that are in the most danger, not your average named jobber.

Well, Taker is near the end, Shawn has already given his retirement date. Plus there's a brace of others like JBL, Kane, Mark Henry, William Regal, who are in or just shy of their forties and one has to wonder how long before they pack it in. So retirements are as much of an issue as releases

Greatest way for them to beat the credit crunch is to make their shows 100% entertaining and get people to fess up a little less money but get more of them doing it. 100 million viewers spending half as much is better than 10 million spending £15 a time. If the WWE product did improve, they wouldn't need as many roster cuts but they'd have to start fast as its gonna hit them even harder soon. It's hard for them, though, as they need their feeder promotions to stay afloat to create new stars, and they need their current stars to be entertaining to gain more revenue. It wont destroy WWE, probably wont affect it as much as we notice it when we're watching it, but it could be a tough time for them.
Guys like Cena, HHH, & Taker are safe, as are Michaels, Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler because they're the recognised guys now to keep them interested. As long as they don't screw it up for themselves, Hardys & Orton should be safe too. Batista, Kane, Henry, etc could wing it and not even be touched by it but the lower card need to succeed fast of be thrown away. When a company as massive as WWE starts being included in the effects of the credit crunch, you know something needs to be shaken so the rust can fall off. It could be a good thing for them, though, a swift kick up the arse to get them performing.
Maybe someone like TNA could use this to their advantage though? By keeping Impact local and somewhat small, they wont be spending as much as WWE & could use this to build for the future if it does actually hit hard.

I think honestly that they're going to have to combine the roster before all is said and done. They already have guys wrestle on shows other than the one they are a part of all the time anyhow.

they should Ditch all of the "Divas" If they want to thin the roster any more.

they should Ditch all of the "Divas" If they want to thin the roster any more. Wrestling fans dislike Divas, as we want "wrestling" - not T&A. Who the hell are we kidding? We all love the T&A just as much as the wrestling... the "piss break!" when Divas come on is just there because we all hate to admit we're trying to hide our boners. Seriously, there's no Diva I find unattractive, though a couple of them have some flaws. (Obvious: Jillian's lips/face. Candice's face. None of them have Velvet Sky's ass, though a couple are close). You can't fire the Divas, as we'd lose our weekly significant other approved T&A (well, those of us with significant others, unlike me who is alone <sobs>). Not everyone has seen everything Maryse and Mickie James have to offer. And I'd love to see more of the ones I haven't seen yet :X

Yeah, but how many of the 50 released guys/gals actually had a vaguely relevant role?
With the exception of a bunch of solid, but rather uncharismatic, midcarders, the rest was largely forgettable. And the guys who were let go from OWW/FCW, well, considering who's "graduating" there, I find it hard to think WWE have missed many boats there.
Probably WWE just decided to tighten the budget a bit, by cutting the dead wood and sparing a bit on minor aspects of the shows.
I won't expect an austerity phase in wrestling, just a slightly more low-profile approach here and there
