Well,if the Red Sox wanted him, they never should've traded him to begin with. Sorry. That's the answer my friends always give me when I say the Tigers should try to get John Smoltz back. The Red Sox got Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell in that trade. Even though they wanted to get rid of Lowell, if they landed Teixeira, that was still a great trade for Boston. Oh,I know that was a good trade for the Sox. I was just messing around. Like I said,I mentioned a couple weeks ago that the Tigers should try to sign Smoltz and they threw that "the Tigers never should've traded him" line at me. I was just using it for my own comedic purposes. There is no doubt that the Sox got good players out of that deal.

I don't know why Florida would want Ellsbury when they already have Maybin lined up as their CF of the future. They probably wanted 3-4 of Lowrie/Masterson/Bowden/Anderson/Buchholz. Red Sox were probably just looking into it to see if he was available, and when they saw the asking price, they walked away.
That said, if you can give up prospects, still keep Lars Anderson and one of Bowden/Masterson, and get a future HOF player in return before he even hits his prime, you make the trade.

Rays signed RHP Joe Nelson, who had been with the Marlins, to a one-year, $1.3 million contract.

Adam Dunn won't sign with L.A. unless they throw boatloads of money at him compared to anyone else in Adam Dunn pursuit. Chavez Ravine is where power hitters go to die. Sure, a guy like Dunn could still be good for 35 HR as a Dodger. But he'd probably consider a more hitter-friendly park with an equally competitive team if the money was comparable.

I'm guessing by Week 3, he beats up a chef for screwing up his Deep Dish.

The Blue Jays have signed OF Raul Chavez and SP Mike Maroth. Mike Maroth is still in the league? I did not know that. I always liked Maroth when he was with the Tigers. I kind of lost track of him after he left. I know he was with the Cardinals briefly but I'm not sure after that. I felt bad for him the year he lost 21 games. I always said he was the best 20 loss pitcher in the majors.

Angels sign Brian Fuentes to 2 year deal Not shocked he's an Angel but only 2 years? Another closer signs for a bargain. Other news: Aaron Miles signs a 2 year deal for the Cubs. The Cubs are also close to sending Mark DeRosa to Cleveland for 2-3 young pitchers. Also the Milton Bradley signing is almost a done deal and the Cubs could also be back in the Peavy hunt... www.mlbtraderumors.comThey're really going for the jugular here...too bad they still won't make it too far ;D

DeRosa will be 34 on opening day. Miles plays the same six positions and switch-hits for less money (and two fewer years of age). The three young pitchers and the Marquis/Vizcaino deal make me think the Cubs are about to bring in Peavy. This is the kind of deal they were looking to make previously with Baltimore, and allows the Cubs to keep Sean Marshall (package likely to resemble the DeRosa acquisitions, Felix Pie, Kevin Hart). DeRosa's 07 and 08 numbers, outside of R/HR/RBI, were basically identical. The jump in production categories typically represents a jump in the quality of players batting before him (more on base means more RISP and more fastballs) and after him (more fastballs since they can't pitch around him, more chances for Rs when they do) than his own quality increase. DeRosa will be a good player for Cleveland, but won't be the guy who brings the pennant back to Lake Erie.
