What did everyone think of them? I don't recall this angle very well, but in looking back on Curt Hennig's career, I did recall some parts of this, especially the awful theme song and the equally bad feud with Master P in WCW.
Oh, and I put a ? in the title because I can't remember if that was their name or not.

You could tell that Curt got into that gimmick after not being used much in WCW. Without Curt Hennig's enthusiasm, I don't think it would have been very noteworthy. Curt really carried the group and helped get them over, when some say WCW never wanted them to get over. I was in Atlanta for the Nitro when they "performed" live and got cheered, while the No Limit Soldier people got booed. I guess WCW underestimated how many of their fans were rednecks and would root for the Cowboys over the rappers.
Seriously, we were supposed to cheer some new guys named Swoll and 4x4 instead of Curt Hennig and Barry Windham?
All in all, lots of fun. Curt Hennig, the Windhams, and Duncum (RIP) looked to be having a blast and as a fan I couldn't help but feel some of the fun myself.

I think it is true that WCW didn't want Hennig & the Rednecks to get over, mainly because they'd forked out a ton of money to have Master P appear on Nitro. But as Crappler said, WCW underestimated the percentage of it's audience that liked the country-music lovin', NASCAR watchin' Rednecks over the No Limit Soldiers. For the longest time WCW was a Southern promotion. You'd really think they would know better.

I actually liked them a lot back then, and I'm not even from the South, nor a country music fan! WCW seriously did not understand how over they were; I was as big of a mark as there can be back then, and even I started cheering for them even though they were supposed to be heels (this is from the guy who hated the nWo-in the right, kayfabe way-despite how revolutionary they were). You should know you have something with a gimmick when they write a song that gets airtime on country music stations across America!
They pulled the plug on them way too soon. I remember tuning in on WCW in '99 (yes, I still watched it by then; it took Vince Russo's booking to finally make me give up completely on the company) and wondering where the Rednecks were all of a sudden. They could have made a pretty great midcard stable if they had been given the chance. Chalk it up to WCW being WCW (read: stupid).
