Emo.
I see that word slung around wildly nowadays and applied to like, a trillion different bands. It's really picked up in the last two years or so, and it's really, really prevalent today.
It's starting to get on my nerves quite a bit, simply because damn near every band it's attributed to is not, in fact, emo. They don't sound anything LIKE emo. And any band that is emo, you've probably never heard of unless you looked for them intentionally.
People like to say genres evolve...but they don't rapidly evolve into something that sounds nothing like what they originally did.
Sometimes I think people just throw the word at anything they don't like, and presume it makes sense.
In any case, emo is emotive hardcore, and it evolved from the punk sound of the late 70's/early 80's. Early bands like Moss Icon and Rites of Spring led the way here.
Then there was the 90's movement, which toned things down a little bit, and picked up some influence from indie rock bands. From here, we got stuff like Cap'n Jazz, Sunny Day Real Estate, early Jimmy Eat World, etc.
There's also the offshoot genre, screamo, that took the influence of the early stuff and made it even heavier, faster, more abrasive, and more emotive. Bands like Drive Like Jehu, Antioch Arrow, Saetia, Circle Takes the Square, and others fall here.
So anyway, if any of you out there actually listen to this stuff, it would be wicked awesome if you'd appreciate it. 'cause it's awesome. And stuff. Yo.
Cap'n Jazz - Little League
Antioch Arrow - Space Age
Circle Takes the Square - Crowquill
I'll post more vidyas later, but yeah. I'm bored and I've been meaning to make this thread for quite some time.
Also, Emo Phillips joke.

*Marks out for Moss Icon mention*
Huge fan of them and Jimmy Eat World. It's a pity the genre gets such derision poured on it, when it's some of the most creative and, well emotive (d'uh) music around.

Don't have anything to add to this discussion other than that I love your Dresden Dolls avatar/status set. Half Jack is one of my favorite songs.

I enjoy Moss Icon. Also a fan of Jimmy Eat World(old stuff and new). I also loved The Get Up Kids and The Anniversary even though it was my understanding they didn't really liked to be classified as such. Sunny Day Real Estate is also awesome.

Yeah, some of the bands didn't really like to be called as such, but the sound was definitely a part of the movement.
And The Get Up Kids were astounding. Midwest emo at its finest. I'm especially proud that they originated in my state. Not much in Kansas to be proud of, but they're definitely one of the things.

I remember staying up late one night and catching SDRE play Seven on MTV and convincing my parents to buy the album for me. Its funny, even listening to it now, it just doesn't seem like Emo because of what the genre has been re-shaped to be. It sounds like a mid-90s alternative group.
Its sad, I remember a period of time where I bought the Diary, The Bends, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Washing Machine and Alice in Chains and I wasn't even a teenager (I know not all Emo, or even close, but the fact remains music's not done much for me in a while, at least in the mainstream). Now I'd like to think I enjoy music much more and haven't bought an album since I got the new Smashing Pumpkins CD about a year ago.

Emo now is based on what you look like. The early emo bands didnt have those emo haircuts that everyone now has.

The genre hasn't really re-shaped to be anything though. There are still real emo bands out there playing the music.
The media and general populace just have no idea what they're talking about, and latched on to a word that doesn't mean what they think it means.

Should have chosen my words a bit wiser, but I'm with you. I think part of the issue is the word "Emo" never really meant anything to me personally. I just kind of listen to music without really believing it has to fit in a specific genre, so listening to SDRE, Get Up Kids or even some stuff like American Football (that my friend was big into), it never really seemed like a movement or specific genre, just a subset. I'm a really big fan of basically every band from the mid-1990s that fits in the huge collection known as "Alternative", and that's what they are too me personally. This new wave of "Emo", however, seems like a fashion statement complete with derivative music. I think the disconnect for me personally is that it seems like a concerted effort to make everything fit one single definition, where what we were getting in the 90s was actual bands using influences to make music not new haircuts.

Yeah, the new "movement", so to speak, is far less about music, and more about fashion statements.
And even here, not all of it fits in the same genre of music. And some people have taken to calling completely out there things "emo"...and it's all just spiraling out of control and getting ridiculous.
And that's not to say that I'm not fond of some of the bands people these days call "emo", some of them are my favourites, it's just that they don't fit in the genre even slightly.

What are Funeral For A Friend?
Cuz if they're emo, then you have my support.

Funeral For a Friend are post-hardcore.
Not a bad band though, but they've never really been able to hold my interest for more than a song or two.

Yeah, it's unfortunate, but most emo/screamo bands were together for roughly 5 minutes before breaking up.
