Nah, I'm not sure I'd put him in emo. Never really associated him with the genre, even when I was confused back in the day.
He is great stuff though.

Yeah, some of the bands didn't really like to be called as such, but the sound was definitely a part of the movement. And The Get Up Kids were astounding. Midwest emo at its finest. I'm especially proud that they originated in my state. Not much in Kansas to be proud of, but they're definitely one of the things. I love GUK. I saw Matt Pryor solo last night. He is really good, and I got his cd. Anthony from Bayside played as well(and is awesome, as is Bayside), and Dustin Kensrue from Thrice was incredible. That said Thrice can have a case made for them being emo as well. Chris Connelly from Saves the Day played as well, so I left and went to Walgreens till he was over. Dude, I have been on the side of the angels in this argument for years and will always back you up.

Thrice definitely have some influence, yeah.
And Matt Pryor IS awesome. I've only seen him with The New Amsterdams, but it was an excellent show.

And more points:
Alexisonfire are awesome and great guys. I got to book them and hang out with them for a day along with Emery, Silverstein and the Higher(what a show that was). 44 caliber love letter is by far my favorite song there.
Worked with Brand New as well, great guys, and they have songs that hit me harder than any one else.
I have heard "Of Montreal" called emo, which is sooo far off base. They are indie dance. They sound like the Shins being raped by Andy and Barry Gibb.
Atom and his Package is just plain awesome.

Yeah, I've heard it a couple of times about Of Montreal too. They're absolutely awesome...but not anywhere even approaching the genre.

I'm more into when emo strays into post-hardcore.
Fugazi anyone?
Glassjaw anyone?

The genre hasn't really re-shaped to be anything though. There are still real emo bands out there playing the music. The media and general populace just have no idea what they're talking about, and latched on to a word that doesn't mean what they think it means. Should have chosen my words a bit wiser, but I'm with you. I think part of the issue is the word "Emo" never really meant anything to me personally. I just kind of listen to music without really believing it has to fit in a specific genre, so listening to SDRE, Get Up Kids or even some stuff like American Football (that my friend was big into), it never really seemed like a movement or specific genre, just a subset. I'm a really big fan of basically every band from the mid-1990s that fits in the huge collection known as "Alternative", and that's what they are too me personally. This new wave of "Emo", however, seems like a fashion statement complete with derivative music. I think the disconnect for me personally is that it seems like a concerted effort to make everything fit one single definition, where what we were getting in the 90s was actual bands using influences to make music not new haircuts. I never liked emo music, but 14 years ago they used to have emo bands playing at hardcore shows or punk shows i.e. sensefield playing on the same set as the pavers, now the emo kids then dressed differently they were still whiny crybabies but now its all different and the word EMO today is thrown around to where if you see a guy wearing a H8 Inc. shirt some iidot would call him EMO

Ok, I'm old: what's the difference between emo and goth music? Some goth music is actually pretty good.

This is why I hate labeling music. Is there a point in creating these arbitrary distinctions between slightly different sounds? As a wise man once said "everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me".
