Sorry you had to go through that. I've always been one of those people who say "Live and let live." Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way. And if we were to smack that guy in his face for being a jerk to you, someone would claim we're hypocrites for not leaving him alone and expressing his opinions.

Kudos on handling it well. Your post also reminded me of why I don't like to visit bars.

Kudos on handling it well. Your post also reminded me of why I don't like to visit bars. Thanks. And yeah I don't tend to frequent bars unless karaoke is involved. And SPEAKING of karaoke, and your avatar, I sang Ziggy Stardust tonight. Good times.

These type of incidents can happen anywhere but perhaps they are more common in more conservative states. This could always happen in a place like New York of course but perhaps gays there would feel more safe than in a place like Kansas.

Yeah, it's not exactly out of the ordinary where I live. It's a small town, too. So it's even more to be expected.
It just hasn't happened to me much since I got out of high school. But it was rampant there.

Just beware of the jerkhole who becomes fixated with his frustrations and continues on with his aggressions towards you. Try to keep yourself level enough to know when to call the cops. I'm not saying you're not, I'm just saying I've seen things like this get out of control.

Yeah, if he starts showing up any other places I frequent or something, I'm not f***ing around. The police will be called.
I'm just hoping it was a one-off incident.

That makes me feel a lot better. You wouldn't believe how hard its been for me to get some people I know to see things the way you already do. One should not f*** around with one's personal safety with these things. There are some real maniacs in the making out there.

And I really appreciate the concern, man.

homophobia doesnt bother me in the slightest, i have been called every slur in the book and whilst it bothered me when i was younger it doesnt anymore. in the small minded community where i live i had to toughen up to it. i have my friends who know about me and accept me and thats all that matters to me, i couldn't give a damn what some stranger thinks

I bet he wanted to kiss you. I mean why else would he "come to your window"?
Oh God forgive the bad Melissa Etheridge joke.

I'm sorry, dude. I lived in Wichita for 22 years so I know how bad that place can be. I'm straight myself, but I had gay friends there who had to hide their sexuality often just to keep from being persecuted. Total bullshit.

The fact that behavior like this still exists today is really disappointing. It's 2009, folks. Emerge from the Dark Ages and be accepting of people.
I'll counter-act this with some good news though. At the University of Scranton - the college I graduated from - a group called SPECTRUM has finally gone from being an "underground" group to an officially recognized group on campus. I meantion this for two reasons. Uno: SPECTRUM identifies themselves as a group that "addresss the needs of GLBT students and their allies" at The U. I think it's great that a group such as this exists, shows that there are people who are open-minded and understanding enough existing in this world. Secondly: I mention this because The University of Scranton is a Catholic university and, as such, showed a lot of opposition towards the group at first. Once again, I'm glad to see that people have opened their minds and changed their stances for the better. I'm sure in the long run of things, it's a small step. But some progress is better than none.

You definitely handled that the right way. That doesn't sound like the kind of guy worth bothering with as far as defending your honor.

Was this near Ft. Riley? Because that wouldn't surprise me at all.

You handled it well. I know the homophobia is pretty bad here in WV as well. I have a cousin who is gay and he gets picked on a lot. He works at a gas station and he said one night, some guy came in and just started giving him crap because he knew he was gay. He said the guy said he should punch his face in for being like that. My cousin told him that if he wanted to fight to meet him at a certain place after he got off of work and they would throwdown. He said the guy kept talking crap and said he was on. My cousin went to the place where he said to meet the guy and not surprisingly, the guy never showed. I kind of wish he would've because my cousin is a pretty tough dude. I don't know what the other guy was like but I think it would've been funny if my cousin would've beat the crap out of him so that guy would've had to tell his redneck buddies that he got beat up by a gay guy.

If I can play Devil's Advocate here...
I think the whole outside scene has more to do with the "smurf you" line itself than with the sexual preference of who said it.
The "he wanted to kiss you" line was indeed stupid and tasteless, but, I guess, you should know better than retaliate with a "smurf you", that would, most likely, make matters worse. And so it did.
