So I finally watched this today for the first time and I must say it was a disapointment. I understand it was supposed to be a joke and the point was to see these old gimmicks again but was the pre match intros being longer than the match itself supposed to be part of the joke ?
I couldnt figure out why they booked the Shiek to win it. I mean wouldnt it have made sense to book someone who was actually popular and over at some point ? You saw the crowd booed heavily when Doink was eliminated and why he wasnt booked to win it and the Shiek who no one likes was I have no idea.

I don't know if Sheik could get over the top rope.

Sheik would have hurt himself if he bumped over the top rope. Sgt. Slaughter was supposed to win, or so I read.

I was stunned that the massive Earthquake wasnt one of the final 4 at the least if not the winner. The booking of this match made no sense but since it was a joke maybe that was the whole idea I dont know. I thought the least popular characters that no one liked should have been gone early and some where like the Gooker and the more popular characters should have lastest the longest and Slaughter was one.

I was there for it live and I really was disappointed with how fast the actual battle royal was. The thing I enjoyed the most was getting to see all of these guys from back in the day being introduced. Oh yeah, I was also disappointed that Kpl. Kirschner and Berzerker had been advertised for it, but weren't there.

Oh for the love of god, bitching about the booking of the gimmick battle royal?
Are you kidding me?
Yes, the intros were supposed to be longer than the match. It was a battle royal featuring 18 guys who were over the hill and out of shape. The whole thing was a joke. I'm sure the booking instructions were "everyone get thrown out as quickly as possible. Sheik wins" Thats it.
Personally I'd like to see one every year. And they should all be booked like that one was.

This is, in my mind, a good example of Vince catching on to something, in this case Wrestlecrap, and missing the point entirely. Kamala, Sgt Slaughter, Earthquake, and The Iron Sheik were presented as crap gimmicks but, for the most part, weren't. By this argument Mr. Perfect, The Million Dollar Man, and The Undertaker should have been included too, those are gimmicks after all. It was obvious what they were going for but missed the mark.
This is also why he used Drowning Pool six years after their saturation point.

I actually really liked it. The only reason it was fast was because they didn't have much time for it and hardly any of those guys could go for a long time anyway considering how old they were. I heard One Man Gang was going to be in it as Akeem but he had lost so much weight he couldn't fit in the costume. lol I liked the One Man Gang gimmick better anyway.

I liked the one on the Raw anniversary better, with IRS winning, then accepting the bribe from DiBiase to eliminate himself.

It's been reported that Shiek won because he wasn't capable of going over the top rope.
And if we're going to take a match seriously, this shouldn't be it. Don't get me wrong; I looked forward to the match when it was first announced and had fun watching it. But like you said, it was supposed to be a joke (it was, after all, on April 1), and used as a break between two hot matches.
Besides, would you prefer watching a random Playboy/Divas bra and panties match instead?

At least someone else does as well.

THANK YOU!
I'm now adding WM X7 to my list of "Stuff to watch tonight because all those poopy brains that I call friends are going to the street party and I can't go"
Thanks for reminding me of how awesome that show was.
Back on topic.
I thought the Gimmick Battle Royal was pretty much as good as it could have been. It was a good comedy break instead of the usual Wrestlemania "Mae Young/Goldust/Kamala, and (current bad gimmick) meet in corridor" sketch.

That battle royal was the highlight of the PPV for me. I love nostalgia kicks, and this one was.....well, heaven, man.....

The idea Im sure was just for people who laughed at these gimmicks years ago to do so again, and lighten the mood for a bit. I thought it was humorous and short, just how it should have been.

I just watched this earlier today, and I must say it didn't disappoint. The only small thing that bothered me was the lack of energy that Mean Gene and Brain put into their commentary.

Oh for the love of god, bitching about the booking of the gimmick battle royal? And don't get me started on how they booked Eugene's Musical Chairs segment on RAW years ago. It should have been Tomko's damn it! But all that politicking held him back again.

One other thing... why does it seem that Doink of all people got the biggest pop from all the entrances?!
