Twins in the playoffs? BWAAAHHH! At least the Mets make the playoffs, Santana wins the CY, and Wright/Reyes are top 5 in MVP voting. We'll beat Philly though

Not just because I'm a Tigers fan,but I think the AL Central will come down to the Tigers and Indians. Minnesota with an outside chance just because no matter how mediocre they look on paper, the Twins always compete. I think the Tigers pitching will rebound from last year and Cabrera,Mags, and Granderson will keep them in the thick of things. The Indians had a respectable offseason and if Cliff Lee can produce at half the rate he did last year, they'll be fighting for that top spot in the Central as well.

I think the Mets have to make the playoffs first before they even think about Philly. But I guess a blind squirrel will find a nut occasionally.

Both Western divisions and AL Central are wide open from top to bottom.
The Cubs are clearly the class of the NL Central. The Cardinals got their magic years from Lohse and Wellemeyer last year. The Astros and Brewers have way too many questions in their rotation, as well. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh will once again be trying not to lose 90 games.
The NL East is a two horse race, but it has been a long enough time since 2003 for the Marlins to squeak by either New York or Philly and get the Wild Card. Atlanta will be better, but that equates to .500; Washington will be a cellar dweller despite Adam Dunn's monster numbers.
The AL East is a strong division. I think karma blows up in the Yankees' face. Boston and Tampa Bay make the playoffs again. Baltimore and Toronto will be in the .500 ballpark.
I think the AL Champ comes out of the East, but the National League has more parity and a wider competition. Manny Ramirez is a major wild card here, since rejoining LA should catapult them to an extra 8-12 wins this season.

I'm really interested to see how the Royals build on the success they had late last season. They ended up finishing better than the Tigers and out of the cellar for a change. They've got the best put together team they've had in years going into this spring with:
C- Olivo and Buck are a solid set of backstops.
1B- They've got Jacobs who had Over 30 HRs and 90 RBI, and he can now play DH too.
2B- Alberto Callaspo hit over .300 in the time he saw at the big league level last year.
3B- Alex Gordon was said to have worked all winter with the hitting coach and should build on his late season run. He should reach closer to his potential this year.
SS- Mike Aviles hit .325 with 10 homers in just over 400 at bats last year and should also have a nice follow up season.
OF- They've got a pretty good, solid group of guys in DeJesus, Crisp, Guillen and Teahan. Crisp may have a resurgence now that he's out of Boston and the front runner for the Center Field job with DeJesus moving to left. And Teahan, Guillen, and Jacobs all splitting time at the RF/DH spot. Jacobs at 1B/DH that is.
Bench- They've got a lot of good, solid backups in Shealy, Gload, German, Willie Bloomquist and Mitch Maier. With Tony Pena mostly being a bust thus far in the running as backup SS/2B. Billy Butler needs to find his swing and produce like the scouts think he can before he can really be considered the starting DH.
Starting Five- 1. Gil Meche was very solid last year. 2. Zach Greinke bounced back from his mental health issues very well. 3. Brian Bannister didn't do that well, but did start over 30 games. 4. Kyle Davies was solid and given more starts, could be decent again. 5. Horacio Ramirez and Luke Hochevar are the guys fighting for the fifth spot, with Hochevar having more upside despite a poor season last year.
Bullpen- Soria is an All Star Closer and somebody they need to lock up for good.
Farnsworth is Farnsworth.
Ron Mahay was good last year and should be again this year. Waechter, Bale, Tejada, and Peralta are all decent middle of the pen guys and possible inning eaters. And they have some other guys who could get in gear and produce for them.
I'm always rooting for the under dog, small market teams and think that this team will keep getting better as they grow up a little bit more. Maybe even a .500 team this year.

ESPN running a story following up about Matt White now. If you don't remember, he's the guy who pretty much got made a billionaire with that rock quarry. Edit: And the ESPN sportcaster pretty much botched the end. Great teleprompter reading

MLB Network is airing a Yankees-Tigers game from 1976. The game's announcer is talking about how much of an eccentric Mark Fidrych is, saying that the pitcher, in addition to slapping the mound and talking to the ball, congratulates his teammates after a good play. How wacky!

Good signing for Atlanta. Provides a veteran presence who can push the young guys for playing time and maybe help them up their game. If anything, this is a smarter signing than Griffey would have been. Anderson is at this point a bit more reliable in the field than Junior, who almost needs to be a DH at this point.

I agree about the Royals to a degree. Most of their success last season was in part to their stellar relief pitching. They traded some of their best guys away. However, I'm likin the addition of Mike Jacobs and (to a degree) Coco Crisp. Plus, I'm HUGE on Soria. When me and my co-worker simulated an entire franchise on MLB 08 The Show, he needed a closer, so I foolishly told him to pick up Soria. Basically, the guy set the major league record for most closes in a season (69), and set the all time career for saves (I don't remember, but since his team was incredible, it was a crap ton!)
